The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ebonyi State Chapter has hailed President Goodluck Jonathan over the recently announced modalities for the proposed National Conference, saying it was well thought out.
Speaking with newsmen at Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital, Rev.Dr S.E Nwokolo, the State CAN Secretary said it was not ideal for people to fault the number of delegates Mr. President has approved for Confab but should be talking on how best the Conference would hold.
He said, “Let me start by saying that kudos should go to Mr. President, His Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, having decided to hold this conference at the time like this, it is a welcome development for him to have made this decision to allow Nigerians to determine what happens in their own country by themselves not a constitution made by the Military or any other Ad hoc group.
“To begin to discuss whether the number of delegates he approved for the Confab is enough or not is not ideal. What I would have preferred us to discuss is how best this Confab is going to hold. As for the representation, I think we have two hundred ethnic groups and if you are talking about four hundred and ninety two representatives, it means the number above that ethnic groups have already been represented within that scope of the approved nominees.
“So we are going to get the best out of the number of delegates that have been approved for the Confab because two good heads are better than one and I believe that there is no way we will not have more than two hundred good heads in the number of delegates that have been approved who will think about the best way to govern this country and bring sanity in the polity of this country. So Mr President is doing his best.”
The CAN Secretary also applauded the number of delegates allotted to the Christian and Muslim groups even though those other delegates he said belong to either of the religious groups.”I thank Mr President for making the two main religions to have a say in the making of national policies,” he added.
Dr Nwokolo further described the challenges President Jonathan is facing as a test of leadership which he said is a global phenomenon and a way of asking the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) not to relent in her governance of the country. He insisted that the heat in the political clime of the country would not affect Jonathan’s 2015 ambition if the masses feel he has done well and deserved another shot in the Presidency.
