The police granted bail to Mr Jalingo on Saturday night.
The senior lawyer said the journalist did not commit any criminal offence to warrant such treatment by the police.
Mr Jalingo and others are being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar, Cross River State.
The police patrolled major roads in Calabar as early as 7 a.m. on Saturday.
“The commissioner of police has agreed with us that the petition was frivolous and not worthy of any investigation.”
Mr Jalingo, an activist and newspaper publisher, is coordinating the planned June 12 protest in Cross River State, Nigeria’s South-south.
The current judge denied the journalist bail and was caught on tape making controversial remarks on the matter.
