World Cup 2026: Morocco, Ghana lead as Africa eyes record-breaking knockout stage representation

The current record was set at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when Algeria, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire all progressed from their groups. Twelve years later, that achievement is set to be bettered

Africa could be on the verge of its greatest-ever collective performance at a FIFA World Cup, with up to five nations still in contention to reach the knockout stage of the expanded 2026 tournament.

With the group phase entering its decisive final stretch, the continent has already produced some of the competition’s most compelling stories, and there is growing belief that African football could surpass its previous benchmark for teams advancing beyond the first round.

The current record was set at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when Algeria, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire all progressed from their groups. Twelve years later, that achievement is set to be bettered.

As things stand, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde and DR Congo are all well positioned to secure places in the Round of 32, while Algeria, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal remain firmly in the qualification race.

Morocco lead Africa’s charge

Among the continent’s representatives, Morocco have been one of the standout performers, as Mohamed Ouahbi’s side began their campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil before following it up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland.

The results have moved the Atlas Lions onto four points and placed them in a commanding position at the summit of Group C heading into the final round of fixtures.

After becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, Morocco are once again demonstrating why they remain one of the most respected teams on the global stage.

Egypt close in on historic qualification

Egypt have also enjoyed a strong start to their campaign. The Pharaohs opened with a draw against Belgium before making history with a memorable 3-1 victory over New Zealand, the country’s first-ever World Cup win.

Led by Mohamed Salah, Egypt sit on four points and know a positive result against Iran could secure their passage into the knockout rounds.

Cape Verde continue fairytale run

No African nation has captured the imagination quite like Cape Verde. Making their World Cup debut, the Blue Sharks stunned observers by holding Spain to a goalless draw before producing another spirited display in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Uruguay.

Those results have left Pedro “Bubista” Brito’s side on the brink of a remarkable achievement.

Victory over Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture could see the island nation qualify for the knockout stage in their first-ever appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

DR Congo show their resilience

Returning to the World Cup after a lengthy absence, DR Congo have also enhanced Africa’s reputation.

The Leopards earned a valuable 1-1 draw against Portugal and remain firmly in the qualification picture heading into their remaining group matches.

Their resilience and organisation have kept them competitive against more fancied opponents and provided hope of extending their stay in North America.

Ghana well placed

Ghana’s campaign began on a positive note with a victory over Panama, placing the Black Stars in a favourable position in Group L.

A strong result against England could move Carlos Queiroz’s side significantly closer to qualification before a potentially decisive final clash against Croatia.

The four-time African champions are seeking a return to the knockout stages after missing out in recent editions of the tournament.

Others still fighting

While several African teams occupy strong positions, others still have work to do. Algeria revived their campaign with a crucial comeback victory over Jordan after suffering defeat to Argentina in their opening match.

South Africa remain alive despite a difficult start that included a 2-0 loss to hosts Mexico before a valuable draw against the Czech Republic kept their hopes intact.

Côte d’Ivoire also remain in the hunt despite their narrow defeat to Germany. The Elephants know qualification remains within their control heading into the final group fixture.

Meanwhile, Senegal, who are one of the continent’s most consistent World Cup performers in recent years, still have a path forward, but, it is no longer in their hands. The Lions of Teranga can boost their knockout ambitions with victory over Iraq, coupled with favourable scorelines elsewhere.

History within reach

With nine African nations still carrying realistic hopes of progression, the continent finds itself in an unprecedented position at this stage of the World Cup.

The expanded 48-team format has created new opportunities, but Africa’s strong showing has been driven as much by quality performances as by circumstance.

From Morocco’s consistency and Egypt’s resurgence to Cape Verde’s fairytale run and DR Congo’s resilience, African teams have demonstrated they can compete with the world’s best.

Should five nations reach the Round of 32, Africa would set a new World Cup record and further underline the growing strength of football across the continent.

With decisive matches still to come, history is now firmly within reach.
