Algeria vs Nigeria PREVIEW: Super Eagles set for fierce AFCON quarter-final test

The winner of the Algeria vs Nigeria clash will advance to the semi-finals to face hosts Morocco, who eliminated Cameroon with a 2-0 victory on Friday night.

Two more semi-final tickets are up for grabs on Saturday at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and Nigeria’s Super Eagles are firmly focused on claiming one of them when they face long-time rivals Algeria in Marrakech.

Saturday’s third quarter-final of the 35th AFCON is shaping up as one of the standout ties of the tournament, bringing together two heavyweights with a long and emotional history on the continental stage.

Troubled build-up

Nigeria’s build-up to the fixture has not been without distractions. Earlier this week, concerns emerged about delayed bonus payments for players and officials, with reports that the squad briefly considered boycotting training and travel if the issue was not resolved.

While no official statement suggests payments have been made, the players have since refocused fully on the task in Marrakech, shelving off-field concerns to concentrate on the bigger prize.

The Super Eagles have also moved quickly to play down suggestions of internal discord following a brief on-pitch disagreement between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the emphatic Round of 16 victory over Mozambique.

The incident, which sparked debate on social media, was dismissed by team officials as a normal competitive exchange between teammates. Former captain John Obi Mikel later defended the duo, describing the moment as a sign of hunger and high standards rather than division.

Both players trained normally afterwards and remain central to Nigeria’s plans, underscoring a squad determined to maintain unity as they chase a place in the semi-finals.

Familiar foes

Nigeria and Algeria will be meeting for the 23rd time at the senior level, renewing a rivalry that began 55 years ago at the 2nd All-Africa Games in Lagos.

Over the decades, clashes between the two teams have delivered drama, shock results, famous goals, painful defeats, and historic triumphs, making this one of African football’s richest rivalries.

This will be the 10th time both countries face each other at the AFCON finals. Nigeria have won only three of the previous nine meetings, while Algeria have recorded four victories, with two matches ending in draws.

One of those draws, the infamous 0-0 encounter in Bouaké in 1984, remains one of the most talked-about matches in AFCON history after both teams were accused of settling for a result that eliminated defending champions Ghana.

History offers moments of pride and pain on both sides. Nigeria defeated Algeria to lift their first AFCON title in Lagos in 1980, while Algeria returned the favour a decade later by beating the Super Eagles to win their maiden title on home soil in 1990. Now, Marrakech is set to host another chapter in this long and emotional story.

Beyond AFCON, the rivalry has extended into high-stakes FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Algeria stunned Nigeria home and away in 1981, knocking out the then-African champions.

Nigeria responded years later with memorable wins, including the famous 4-1 comeback in Lagos in 1993, inspired by Jay-Jay Okocha and Rashidi Yekini, and the emphatic 5-2 victory in Oran in 2005.

AFCON meetings between both sides have often been tense and dramatic. From Nigeria’s penalty shootout win in Rabat in 1988, sealed by the late Peter Rufai’s heroics, to Algeria’s heartbreaking late win in the 2019 semi-final through Riyad Mahrez’s stoppage-time free-kick, the margins have always been thin.

What the coaches are saying

As preparations continue at the 45,000-capacity Grand Stade de Marrakech, Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle insists his players are fully focused on the task ahead.

“It’s crucial for me to maintain focus on the pitch. While energy matters, the mindset is paramount. Our group will remain united,” Chelle said.

“This match is critical against a formidable opponent. We are in the process of determining our game plan. I hold a deep respect for this Algerian team; their staff operates with exceptional professionalism. I’m not dwelling on revenge for 2019. My priority is to compete fiercely and secure qualification.”

Algeria coach Vladimir Petković is equally confident, believing his side has the quality and mentality to overcome the Super Eagles, whom they have not lost to since Nigeria’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win in Uyo in 2016.

“The most important thing is the state of mind. It all starts from there, and from that point of view, we are irreproachable,” Petković said.

“Tomorrow (Saturday), we need to be just as good defensively as offensively. That will be paramount. All the details will matter against Nigeria. Nothing should be left to chance. We have the quality. We believe in ourselves and we just have to play a big game.”

Form and key stars

Form-wise, both teams arrive with confidence. Nigeria have scored 12 goals in four matches, brushing aside Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16, while Algeria have netted eight times and needed a late extra-time strike to eliminate DR Congo.

Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams have led Nigeria’s attack with pace, power and hunger, while Algeria boast proven match-winners like Riyad Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah, Ismaël Bennacer and emerging star Adil Boulbina.

Osimhen and Lookman, key figures in Nigeria’s runner-up finish two years ago, have again delivered in Morocco, with each scoring three goals so far. Osimhen is closing in on Nigeria’s all-time scoring record, while Lookman continues to combine goals with assists. Captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi have also anchored the team with energy and discipline.

Saturday’s clash will be the 25th senior meeting between the two nations. Algeria have won 10 times, Nigeria nine, with five draws — one of which Nigeria won on penalties. With history, form and pride all in play, another fierce contest is expected.

The winner will advance to the semi-finals to face hosts Morocco, who eliminated Cameroon with a 2-0 victory on Friday night.

Kickoff is 5 pm local time.
