NPFL: Decade later, Lagos derby returns as Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos battle for bragging rights

Lagos football gets a fresh chapter on Sunday when Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos meet at arguably the most-used turf in the nation, the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, in what will be the first top-flight Lagos derby in a decade.

The meeting was not initially expected to carry such historic significance. Sporting Lagos were originally scheduled to face fellow Lagos side Ikorodu City in Matchday Two (which would have been the first Lagos derby in the top flight in 10 years). Still, the fixture was postponed after the Mobolaji Johnson Arena was made unavailable because of a political rally.

That postponement has now paved the way for a derby that has been waiting to happen for 10 years. For both clubs, however, Sunday is about much more than history and bragging rights.

Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos are both searching for their first points and goals of the new Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, making the derby an early opportunity for one side to get its campaign moving finally.

Decade after MFM vs Ikorodu United

The last time Lagos witnessed a top-flight derby was on 3 July, 2016 when MFM FC faced Ikorodu United.

MFM, the “Olukoya boys”, came out on top in a 3-1 victory, with Sikiru Olatunbosun scoring twice and Stephen Odey also getting on the scoresheet.

Fatai Abdullahi converted a penalty for Ikorodu United, but it ultimately proved only a consolation as MFM claimed the bragging rights.

Ten years later, the stage has been reset.

This time, Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos are set to take over the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. This venue has hosted several memorable Lagos football encounters, as the city once again gets a taste of top-flight derby football.

It is interesting to note that this will also be the first-ever NPFL meeting between Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos, adding another layer to a rivalry that has previously played out in friendlies and second-tier encounters.

Inter Lagos vs Sporting Lagos: Bragging rights battle

The two clubs have already started trading jabs ahead of the encounter, with social media becoming another battleground before the players settle matters on the pitch.

Inter Lagos have pointed to their unbeaten record against Sporting Lagos, boasting three wins and one draw from their previous four meetings dating back to friendly and second-tier encounters.

Sporting Lagos, though, arrive with an important advantage in experience as the “noisy Lagosians” have already tasted NPFL football, featuring in the top flight during the 2023/24 season before suffering relegation.

Sporting actually began that campaign impressively, going unbeaten in their opening three matches, recording one victory and two draws.

Their return to the top flight has not started well, but they will be hoping things change very soon, beginning with the derby against Inter Lagos.

Both sides searching for spark

Inter Lagos have had two opportunities to make their mark in their debut NPFL campaign, but have suffered defeats in both.

They opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Shooting Stars in Ibadan before falling to another defeat against Doma United. That second defeat came at home, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, with Doma United edging Inter Lagos 1-0.

Sporting Lagos, meanwhile, have played only once so far, having begun their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Doma United before their scheduled Matchday Two meeting with Ikorodu City was postponed.

That means Sporting have a game in hand on their Sunday opponents, but both sides enter the derby desperate for a breakthrough.

Neither team has scored in the league this season, and that makes the first Lagos derby in 10 years even more mouth-watering.

Doma United have set the early pace

The Deji Ayeni-led side is currently first on the log with maximum points gotten from their first 3 games, and have scored 5 unanswered goals in the league so far.

The irony of the situation is that the same opponent has already beaten both Lagos clubs: Doma United defeated Sporting Lagos 2-0 in their opening fixture before travelling to Lagos to beat Inter Lagos 1-0.

The promoted side has since taken that excellent start to another level, as on Saturday, Doma United defeated nine-time champions Enyimba 2-0 at the Pantami Stadium, making it three wins from three matches and leaving them at the top of the early NPFL standings with nine points and three clean sheets.

Sadiq Rilwan scored his third goal of the campaign, while Yusuf Fantami added the second for the Savannah Tigers in the tie against the 2-time CAF Champions League winners up north.

For Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos, Sunday therefore offers an opportunity to write a very different story as one of them will finally have points on the board, and one could finally have a goal to celebrate.

And, perhaps most importantly, one will leave the Mobolaji Johnson Arena with the first bragging rights in this new Lagos rivalry.

A derby with more than three points at stake

There is no escaping the fixture’s importance from a league perspective.

Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos occupy the bottom two positions entering the weekend, with Inter having played one more game.

For Inter, another defeat would mean three losses from three matches and an increasingly difficult start to life in the top flight; simply put, relegation form.

For Sporting, victory would immediately change the mood around their return to the NPFL and provide their first points of the campaign.

The derby also offers both clubs an opportunity to put their early-season frustrations aside.

Form can often become irrelevant when local rivals meet, particularly when history, familiarity, and bragging rights are involved.

Sunday is therefore not simply about which team is better on paper. It is about who handles the occasion better, who finds the first goal, who responds when the pressure arrives, and who walks away able to tell Lagos that they own the first chapter of this new top-flight rivalry.

After 10 years without a Lagos derby in the top flight, the city finally has one again, and with both Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos still searching for their first point and first goal, there could hardly be a better setting for a new rivalry to announce itself.
