Nigeria’s Falconets will put their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 campaign on the line when they face debutants New Caledonia in their final Group F fixture on Sunday.
The must-win encounter, scheduled for 2pm Nigerian time at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź, presents Moses Aduku’s side with a crucial opportunity to secure the victory that could send them through to the Round of 16.

Nigeria have one point from their opening two games after a 2-0 defeat to Spain was followed by a 0-0 draw against China PR. New Caledonia, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the group without a point after heavy defeats to heavyweights China and Spain.
With everything still to play for, the Falconets know there is little room for another missed opportunity.

New Caledonia making history
For New Caledonia, the tournament itself represents a landmark moment.
The Oceania nation are making their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup debut, having become the first New Caledonian women’s team to qualify for a FIFA women’s tournament.
They booked their place in Poland after finishing runners-up at the 2025 OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, defeating Fiji 2-0 in the semi-final before losing 3-0 to New Zealand in the final.
That qualification marked a historic breakthrough for New Caledonian women’s football, but their first appearance on the global stage has proved extremely demanding.
Brutal start for Les Cagous
New Caledonia opened their campaign with a 5-0 defeat to China PR before suffering an even heavier setback against Spain.
The Spanish side ran out 11-0 winners, matching the record for the biggest victory in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup history; as the statistics from the encounter underlined the gulf New Caledonia faced.
They failed to register a single shot, while Spain attempted 67 times, with 34 efforts on target. Spain also completed 538 of their 588 passes, compared with just 35 completed passes from New Caledonia’s 110 attempts.
Interestingly, New Caledonia were not short of effort without the ball. They recorded 379 pressing actions to Spain’s 37 and forced 33 turnovers, compared with Spain’s 29.
Their problem was turning that defensive work into meaningful attacking opportunities: they attempted 91 line breaks. Still, they completed only 13, and their inability to maintain possession and create chances left them under sustained pressure.
After two matches, New Caledonia have conceded 16 goals without scoring. However, they remain mathematically alive for one of the four best third-placed positions, although their chances are extremely slim.
Falconets must turn possession into goals
Nigeria, meanwhile, arrive at the final group game needing to solve one of the biggest problems that has followed them through their opening two matches: converting opportunities, as they have been wasteful in front of goal.
The Falconets produced encouraging numbers in their goalless draw with China.
Nigeria completed 277 of 390 passes, giving them a 71 per cent completion rate compared with China’s 62 per cent. They also completed 91 line breaks to China’s 71 and nine defensive-line breaks compared with China’s five.
Nigeria further won seven corners against China’s two and attempted 19 crosses, although only one found its intended target.
But the concern was at the other end. Despite their territorial and technical superiority in several areas, the Falconets managed only one shot on target from 10 attempts, a very poor return on the day.
That statistic has to change against New Caledonia as Nigeria cannot afford to dominate possession and territory without turning that advantage into goals, in fact, an avalanche of goals, particularly with their qualification hopes depending heavily on the result.
Group F Standings and Qualification Picture
Spain has already secured their place in the Round of 16 after winning both of their opening matches and scoring 13 goals without conceding.
China PR are second with four points, Nigeria have one point, while New Caledonia are yet to get off the mark.
The top two teams in each of the six groups, alongside the four best third-placed teams, will progress to the knockout stage.
That makes Nigeria’s final group fixture particularly significant.
What Nigeria need against New Caledonia
The simplest scenario for Nigeria is victory, as a win would take the Falconets to four points and put them firmly in the qualification conversation.
There is, however, still a complicated scenario involving the other Group F fixture between China PR and Spain.
If China defeat Spain, China would finish top with seven points, while Nigeria would finish third regardless of the margin of victory.
If China and Spain draw, China would move to five points, and Nigeria would still finish third on four points if they defeat New Caledonia.
If Spain beat China, the situation turns in Favour of the Falconets. China would remain on four points, while a Nigerian victory would also take the Falconets to four. That could bring goal difference into play.
China currently have a +5 goal difference, while Nigeria sit at -2. If Spain win by one goal, China would fall to +4, meaning Nigeria would need to win by at least six goals to draw level on goal difference, with goals scored then becoming the next tiebreaker.
For that reason, Nigeria’s first objective must be clear: win the game, win well by a high margin, and then wait for the result between China and Spain.

There is also a route through the third-place standings.
Nigeria can still qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams, with four points already looking competitive in that table. However, goal difference and results from the other groups will ultimately determine whether that route is enough.
Test of Nigeria’s mentality
On paper, Nigeria enter the contest as clear favourites.
New Caledonia have conceded 16 goals in two matches without finding the net. At the same time, the Falconets have already demonstrated against China that they possess the technical ability to move the ball, penetrate defensive lines and control significant portions of a game.
But this is precisely the kind of fixture where Nigeria must avoid complacency.
New Caledonia’s pressing numbers against Spain showed that they are willing to work aggressively without possession. Their challenge has been sustaining that pressure while also creating attacking opportunities.
Nigeria will therefore need to move the ball quickly, exploit the wide areas and attack the spaces that could emerge behind New Caledonia’s defensive structure.
Most importantly, the Falconets must be more clinical, as they have created enough chances across their opening two matches to suggest the goals can come, but what has been missing is the final touch.
Against New Caledonia, that finishing quality could determine whether Nigeria extend their World Cup campaign or heads home.
For Aduku and his players, there is no need to complicate the immediate task.
The Falconets need the three points, and as the tournament enters its decisive stage, Nigeria will have to combine the technical improvement shown against China with the ruthlessness that was missing in their opening two matches.
