ANALYSIS: How Remo Stars moved from NPFL champions to relegation battlers

Remo Stars’ collapse has been driven by convergence, not coincidence. A mass exodus without adequate replacement, coaching instability, accumulated fatigue, cautious investment, and stadium turmoil combined into a perfect storm. The champions were not equipped to defend their crown.

Remo Stars’ collapse after their first NPFL title has been dramatic.

In the 2024/25 season, they swept all before them; a powerful attack (49 goals) and solid defence (31 conceded) saw them finish on 71 points, 7 clear at the top.

But by early 2026, the champions had slumped to the foot of the table. A slew of factors converged to undo them: a near-total squad overhaul, intermittent coaching absences, fatigue from sustained title campaigns, and even off-field disruptions like stadium bans.

How did a team that defined consistency unravel so quickly?

PREMIUM TIMES examines the key factors behind one of the sharpest declines in recent NPFL history.

From benchmark to breakdown

The statistical contrast is revealing.

During their title-winning campaign, Remo recorded 22 wins, five draws and 11 defeats from 38 matches. Their +18 goal difference reflected balance and control. They averaged 1.29 goals per game while conceding just 0.82.

By the midway point of 2025/26, that structure had collapsed. After 25 matches, they had managed only eight wins, three draws and 16 defeats. Goals scored dropped to 24, while goals conceded rose to 34. Their win rate effectively halved, and their points-per-game average fell from 1.87 to under 1.0.

By February 2026, they had already exceeded their total number of losses from the championship season. Clean sheets became rare. Defensive lapses became routine. Matches that once tilted in their favour now slipped away.

The numbers confirm what the table reflects: regression across every measurable area.

The offseason exodus

A major warning sign appeared in the off-season: nearly the whole title squad turned over. Reports suggest between “75–85% of the title-winning squad departed” through sales, loans or contract expiries.

In previous publications, PREMIUM TIMES listed dozens of key departures: ex-captain Nduka Junior, defence lynchpins Sodiq Ismail and Fabian Nworie (just returned to the side mid-season from Enyimba), midfield stars Tochukwu Michael (to Wolfsberger AC, in Austria), Jide Fatokun (mid-season to Al-Merrikh of Sudan), and goal poachers Sikiru Alimi (JS Saoura), Frank Mawuena (Tuwaiq FC), and even homegrown talent, goalkeeper Kayode Bankole (sold to South Africa’s TS Galaxy), to name a few.

On a closer look, in all, at least 17 regulars left (some on loan, many on free transfers) with few equally-proven faces brought in.

The result was “visible gaps across all areas of the pitch”.

Club insiders admit the rebuild was flat: as analyst Oluwaseunfunmi Sadiq put it, Remo “simply haven’t invested enough to match their ambitions”.

In short, the squad was hollowed out, yet management adopted a “cautious approach to recruitment” rather than replacing stars with similarly talented players.

This failure to reinforce left the team brittle, exposing them to collapse once results began to dip.

Coaching instability

Daniel Ogunmodede remained head coach, but his availability became inconsistent.

During the title season, he balanced club duties, national team commitments, and coaching courses. In 2025/26, his absences became more noticeable. He missed league matches and was away during his CAF B License training.

The club clarified at one stage that “he is PRESENTLY in Abuja, undergoing his CAF B course.” Ogunmodede himself posted: “I’m excited to be part of the final phase of the CAF B License course. We can be better!”

Professional development is commendable, but on-field continuity suffered. Assistants stepped in, yet tactical rhythm fluctuated. The crushing 5–1 CAF Champions League defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns intensified scrutiny.

After that loss, Ogunmodede admitted it was “shameful” and added, “The fault is mine”.

Even when present, he referenced fatigue and mental strain affecting performances.

Leadership remained intact in principle, but consistency from the dugout — crucial during transitional periods — was diluted.

Fatigue from sustained contention

Remo’s title did not come from nowhere. They had finished as runners-up in consecutive seasons before lifting the trophy. The physical and psychological toll of multiple high-pressure campaigns accumulated.

During the 2024/25 run-in, Ogunmodede acknowledged that “fatigue was a significant factor” after congested fixtures and long travel schedules. He noted, “We had two tough games within five days, travelled over eight hours – a lot of fatigue.”

Such strain rarely disappears overnight. The following season began with continental commitments and domestic expectations.

Players who had operated at peak intensity for years appeared drained. The sharp pressing, transitions and late-game control that defined the champions were harder to sustain.

Fatigue alone does not cause collapse, but combined with squad depletion, it accelerates decline.

Statistical regression

Beyond points totals, the underlying data illustrate structural erosion.

Goals per game dropped sharply. Conceding frequency increased. They conceded first in a majority of recent fixtures. Defensive organisation, once a strength, deteriorated.

By February 2026, they were among the weaker defensive sides in the division. The margin for recovery in matches shrank, and comeback victories disappeared.

Where the champions once controlled tempo, they now chased games.

Matches that confirmed the slide

Certain fixtures crystallised the crisis.

A 2–0 defeat to Kun Khalifat left them bottom of the table. A 2–1 loss to Wikki Tourists followed, marked by defensive errors and late lapses. A 2–1 home defeat to Plateau United exposed vulnerability at both ends.

Even draws deepened concern. A 1–1 stalemate against Abia Warriors, played at a neutral venue due to stadium sanctions, felt like two dropped points rather than one gained.

Each match reinforced a pattern: inability to protect leads, struggle to recover from setbacks, and recurring defensive breakdowns.

Momentum had reversed completely.

Investment and ownership: Was the rebuild undermined?

Behind the scenes, observers question whether Remo’s ownership truly bolstered the squad. The club is famously backed by Bet9ja Kunle Soname, a wealthy football investor. Yet press reports hint at caution on the transfer front. As PREMIUM TIMES noted, Remo’s management “failed to replace key departures with players of similar or higher quality” in an earlier report.

The club’s own announcements corroborated dozens of exits, but signings received little fanfare. Critics were blunt: “To consistently compete, you need the right materials. Remo Stars simply haven’t invested enough to match their ambitions,” said analyst Onuh Victor.

In other words, while other top Nigerian clubs spent aggressively, Remo appeared to tighten its belt after the title. This likely stemmed partly from financial prudence, but the effect was a weakened squad.

In recent interviews, Mr Soname has decried the league’s overall financial and officiating woes, but he gave no public defence of any under-spending at Remo. The evidence is on the pitch: a depleted roster without adequate replacement.

Ogunmodede’s perspective

Coach Ogunmodede himself has alternated between accountability and optimism. He did not duck blame for poor results: after the 5–1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, he chastised his team, saying “we lost our heads, very, very bad for what I have built. The fault is mine; I’m the coach”.

He also acknowledged the margins were razor-thin: as champion, he talked about how “tension got to us” in must-win games. In press conferences this season, he admitted fatigue hurt the team’s performance but praised his men’s fight. He has maintained confidence that they “will fight for all the points left”.

In sum, Ogunmodede’s voice in the media has emphasised unity and resilience, but pundits and analysts alike have highlighted systemic problems (fitness, manpower) beyond coaching. Whether overworked by dual duties or limited by a poorer squad, one cannot hide that this is the worst run of Ijaball’s decade at the club.

Stadium instability

Off-field disruption compounded sporting issues.

Renovations to the Ikenne stadium forced relocation to Abeokuta early in the season. Subsequently, crowd trouble led to a N7 million fine and banishment from their traditional home ground.

Matches were moved across multiple venues, including Ibadan, Benin and Akure.

The absence of a consistent home base disrupted preparation and diluted home advantage. Travel demands increased. Fan presence fluctuated.

For a side already struggling for rhythm, logistical instability proved another burden.

The reset? Usman Abd’Allah arrives

With relegation fears growing and the old model exhausted, Remo Stars moved decisively. In February 2026, the club confirmed the appointment of Usman Abd’Allah as Technical Adviser, effective immediately; a clear signal that the status quo was no longer acceptable.

In its statement, the club described the move as “a significant step in the club’s vision to elevate its performance.”

Abd’Allah arrives with a formidable résumé: a UEFA Pro Licence, advanced coaching and management degrees from Le CREPS de Montpellier in France, Singapore’s NCAP Level 1 certification, and a LaLiga Coaching Certificate.

His coaching journey spans Asia, France and Nigeria. Domestically, he worked with the Super Eagles technical crew under Jose Peseiro, led Enyimba FC to an NPFL title in 2018/19, and guided them to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, where they narrowly lost to Raja Casablanca. His CV also includes a developmental role at Kano Pillars FC.

Remo Stars believe Abd’Allah’s blend of international exposure and deep local knowledge positions him to steady the ship. The club expressed optimism that “exciting moments” lie ahead under his leadership.

And that is a belief that even the most optimistic of the Skyblue stars fans might not share, given the manner of the fall from standards this season.

Conclusion

Remo Stars’ decline is not the product of a single misstep. It reflects convergence: extensive squad turnover without adequate reinforcement, intermittent coaching presence, accumulated fatigue, conservative recruitment, and stadium disruptions.

The champions of 2024/25 built success on stability and cohesion. The 2025/26 version has operated amid transition and turbulence.

Now, survival, not silverware, defines the objective.

The coming weeks will determine whether the reset under Abd’Allah marks recovery or merely postpones reckoning. What is clear is that Remo Stars’ fall has become one of the defining storylines of the current NPFL season.
