President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to screen and confirm three nominees for non-career ambassadorial appointments.
The nominees are Kayode Are (Ogun State), Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa State) and Ayodele Oke (Oyo State).
The president’s request was conveyed in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary.
Mr Tinubu said the nominations were made in line with Section 171 (1), (2)(c) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the president to appoint ambassadors,

He therefore urged the Senate to give them swift consideration.
After reading the letter, the senate president referred the request to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and directed the committee to report back within one week.
The appointments come nearly two years after Mr Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non‑career, in September 2023.
Once confirmed, the nominees are expected to assume duties at key foreign missions to represent Nigeria’s interests abroad.

The ambassadors act as the personal representatives of the president and the Nigerian government, conveying Nigeria’s official positions on political, economic, and global issues.
They protect Nigeria’s interests abroad through political, economic, security, and strategic interests, as well as promoting Nigeria’s image internationally. Most importantly, they represent Nigeria in bilateral or multilateral discussions, treaties, and agreements involving the host country.
