A 61-year-old Turkish fugitive, Acar Huseyin, has been repatriated from Nigeria back to Turkey to serve his prison sentence.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) disclosed on Wednesday that Mr Huseyin was convicted of fraud at the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court earlier this year.
He had been sentenced to 14 years, 8 months, and 10 days in prison by the court, but fled the country to avoid serving his sentence.

“Huseyin, who was convicted for fraud by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court earlier this year, fled Turkey shortly after judgment in an attempt to evade serving a sentence of 14 years, 8 months, and 10 days,” the police statement read.
The Turkish fugitive had travelled through the Middle East into Nigeria, according to the NPF.
However, upon the request of the Turkish Central Bureau of INTERPOL made in July, the Nigerian police began an intelligence-driven operation which led to his arrest in the Nigerian capital.
“Acting on this request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja initiated discreet intelligence-led operations which led to his arrest in Abuja.
“Following the completion of the necessary documentation and in collaboration with relevant international partners, the fugitive has been successfully repatriated to Istanbul to commence his sentence

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, described the operation as essential, stressing that Nigeria will never serve as a refuge for fugitives seeking to evade justice.”
He also noted that the NPF is committed to international cooperation and efforts to combat transnational crime.
The IGP also stressed the police’s “commitment to honouring international obligations, strengthening police-to-police cooperation, and supporting global efforts against transnational crime.”
