Nigerian music stars Damini ‘Burna Boy’ Ogulu, Ahmed ‘Asake’ Ololade, and Oyinkansola ‘Ayra Starr’ Aderibigbe have earned multiple nominations at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
The organisers unveiled the nominations on Tuesday, with many Nigerian musicians nominated in different categories.

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) ceremony is an annual event celebrating the best in music videos and pop culture. It is globally known for its star-studded performances and fan-voted categories.
The 2025 edition will take place on 7 September 2025 at UBS Arena in Long Island, New York, United States, where the winners will be awarded.

New categories
This year, the organisers also included two more categories: “Best Country” and “Best Pop Artist.”
In the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category, ‘Active’ by Asake and Travis Scott, ‘TaTaTa’ by Burna Boy and Travis Scott, ‘Get It Right’ by Tems ft. Asake, Piece of My Heart’ by Wizkid and Brent Faiyaz, and Baby (‘Is It A Crime’) by Rema bagged nominations. Their fellow nominees include Ghana’s Moliy, Jamaican artistes Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea, along with South Africa’s Tyla, who also secured another nomination in the “Best Choreography” category for her ‘Push 2 Start.’
Burna Boy also picked up another nomination for ‘Higher’ in the “Video for Good” category. At the same time, Ayra Starr secured an “MTV PUSH Performance of the Year” nomination for her ‘Last Heartbreak Song’.
Lady Gaga leads
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga leads the entire pack with a staggering 12 nominations, including key categories like “Video of the Year”, “Artist of the Year”, and “Song of the Year”. She is closely followed by Bruno Mars with 11 nods and Kendrick Lamar with 10.
