Sadiq Umar’s Copa del Rey journey this season continues to mirror the story of his career in Spain: resilience, redemption, and moments that swing on the finest of margins.
The Super Eagles forward was once again on the scoresheet for Valencia on Wednesday night, but his goal proved insufficient as Los Che suffered a dramatic 2–1 defeat to Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla, agonisingly exiting the Copa del Rey.

It was a night of extremes for the Nigerian striker. Sadiq endured early heartbreak when he inadvertently put the ball into his own net, only to respond with composure and instinct to restore parity before Valencia’s hopes were shattered deep into stoppage time.

Despite the defeat, Sadiq Umar will draw genuine encouragement from his growing influence. The goal marked his second in the Copa del Rey since rejoining Valencia during the winter transfer window, following a difficult first half of the season at Real Sociedad, where opportunities and momentum proved hard to come by.
He had previously found the net in Valencia’s 2–0 victory over Burgos CF, a result that booked their place in the quarter-finals, and his latest strike underlines a forward rediscovering confidence at a crucial stage of the campaign.
