On Tuesday, world football governing body FIFA triggered outrage after suggesting that South Africa could qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they beat Nigeria and Benin fail to win against Lesotho.
The post, made on FIFA’s official X (formerly Twitter) accosunt, was accompanied by pictures of Bafana Bafana players.

Intended as a routine qualification scenario update, it instead sparked accusations of bias and double standards — especially from Nigerian fans.
Fans cry foul
Almost immediately, FIFA’s post was flooded with angry replies. Many Nigerians accused the body of overlooking the unresolved issue of South Africa allegedly fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2-0 win over Lesotho in March.

“FIFA is showing signs of partiality. Until the case involving South Africa fielding an ineligible player is resolved, FIFA is now looking corrupt. Let’s not forget the CAF president is from South Africa.”
Another fan, UZUAZOMARO, fumed:
“It appears your organization has been compromised. The unholy union between you and Motsepe will never be allowed to stand. The points have to be deducted!!!”
AbdulAzeez added:
“You will overlook South Africa’s infractions? Wow. Really? Just wow!”
For Ohagwu Chukwuebuka, the demand was straightforward:
“What about the South Africa 3 points deduction we all agreed would happen after they fielded an ineligible player? Agreement is agreement, FIFA. Sharply activate.”
Background
The uproar follows Monday’s revelation by former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh, who explained that South Africa risk sanctions for fielding Mokoena despite his alleged suspension. Under FIFA rules, such breaches usually result in forfeiture of the match, fines, and possible player bans.
While FIFA has yet to issue any ruling, Oliseh’s comments heightened awareness of the controversy — making Tuesday’s post feel, to many Nigerians, like a premature endorsement of South Africa.
