Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos office of PREMIUM TIMES ahead of the much-anticipated Troost Ekong Foundation Charity Match, taking place on Sunday, 22 June, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
The 30-year-old defender, who recently celebrated 10 years with the Nigerian national team, arrived accompanied by his team and Foundation staff. He took time to reflect on his decade-long journey with the Super Eagles and the mission behind his growing philanthropic efforts.
“Ten years is not easy, especially with such a dynamic team like the Super Eagles,” Ekong said. “It’s still a huge honour for me every time I get to wear the jersey. And now, to wear the captain’s armband makes it even more special.”

Ekong made his debut under the late Stephen Keshi on 13 June 2015, in Kaduna—a day he says changed his life forever.

Ever grateful to ‘Big Boss’ Stephen Keshi for believing in him, Ekong now has 79 caps, five major tournaments, and three medals to his name.
Back to Lagos with a purpose
Although most fans are accustomed to seeing him during Super Eagles assignments in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, Ekong said Lagos has always held personal significance for him.
“Lagos isn’t new to me. I spent a lot of my childhood in Ikeja. My dad still lives here. So it’s like coming home,” he said during his visit.
“This year, we had so many requests to bring our foundation charity match to Lagos. We’ve been working on it for about six months, and now it’s finally happening.”
The Troost Ekong Foundation Charity Match 2025 promises an exciting blend of entertainment and purpose.
Set for Sunday at Onikan Stadium, the event features a star-studded cast including Alex Song, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Broda Shaggi, Falz, Bovi, OdumoduBlvck, and more.
Tickets are priced at N3,000 for regular and N35,000 for VIP, with proceeds going toward programs that support underprivileged children in Nigeria.
“We’re playing to raise funds and awareness for the underprivileged children we support through the Foundation. That’s something I’m very proud of.”
Giving back through the game
Launched several years ago, the Troost-Ekong Foundation is deeply involved in supporting orphans and vulnerable children, especially in Uyo, through housing, education, and sport.
“Nigeria has given me so much, and I’m extremely grateful. Starting the foundation was my way of giving back,” he said.

“Our work began back home in Uyo. We want to give kids the chance to dream and build their own futures. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m really proud of how far we’ve come.”
For Ekong, the charity match is not just an event—it’s a platform to inspire and empower. He encourages his fellow footballers and celebrities to use their influence for good.

“Because I’ve had the chance to live my dream—to play football at the highest level—I feel it’s important to use my platform for something meaningful.”
A message to young Nigerians
As the defender marks a milestone, he remains focused on mentoring the next generation of footballers.
“Keep working hard. Stay humble. And most importantly, keep dreaming,” he advised. “My journey to becoming a Super Eagle and captain started with a dream, too. But nothing comes easy—it takes hard work and sacrifice.”
Join the Movement
Closing out his visit, Ekong called on fans and supporters to be part of Sunday’s charity match.
“I’m really excited to announce our charity match this Sunday, June 22nd, at Onikan Stadium. We’ve got a fantastic lineup of stars, and it’s going to be a fun day,” he said. “But more importantly, every naira raised will go toward supporting underprivileged children. I hope to see you all there.”
