Drone Mishap: Nigerian government delivers additional relief materials to Tudun Biri community

The Nigerian government has delivered relief materials to the Tudun Biri community in Kaduna state, where an accidental Nigerian army drone strike killed at least 88 people in December 2023.

On Wednesday, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Mayirenso Saraso, made the presentation on behalf of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The materials include two motorcycles, a Corolla generator, two wireless microphones, a single-power amplifier mixer, and 500-watt flood lights. The beneficiaries are Isuwa Haruna, Ridwan Yakubu, and Isah Ahmed.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the people were killed in December 2023, when an army drone bombed villagers celebrating the annual Maolud Nabbiy.

Following the incident, the federal and state governments pledged to provide social amenities like roads, water, schools, hospitals and a skills acquisition centre for the community.

Last year, the Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, commissioned a 25-bed primary healthcare centre and a skills acquisition centre in the community.

Mr Saraso, the army officer, said the federal government’s donation on Wednesday was in line with the promise made in the aftermath of the incident.

He reiterated the Nigerian Army’s condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

“The Tudun Biri drone mishap occurred during a military offensive against bandits and violent extremists around the axis. Tragically, the strike resulted in the loss of innocent lives and destruction of property,” the GOC said.

He added that the army was committed to bringing succour to the community through various support and recovery initiatives.

“This is not just about items; it is about rebuilding trust, healing, and continuing our engagement with the people of Tudun Biri,” Mr Saraso said.

Also speaking at the event, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, James Kanyip, assured the community of the State Government’s continued support.

He commended the Nigerian army for its proactive outreach and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term rehabilitation and assistance for the victims.
