The Abia State Government has commenced the payment of outstanding salaries and entitlements owed to former Councillors who served across the 17 local government areas of Abia between 1999 and 2022.
Uzor Nwachukwu, the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Tuesday, 10 March.
“This development follows the successful verification exercise conducted to authenticate legitimate claims and ensure that the process is transparent, fair, and accountable,” Mr Nwachukwu stated.
He said the payment is in line with the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti’s commitment “to uphold the principles of justice, dignity, equity, and fairness in governance”.

“By addressing these outstanding obligations, the present administration is reaffirming its belief that public service deserves recognition and respect, and that those who have contributed to the governance of the State should not be left without their lawful entitlements,” he added.

The Abia State Government has commenced the payment of outstanding salaries and entitlements owed to verified former Councillors who served across the seventeen (17) Local Government Areas of the State between 1999 and 2022.
This development follows the successful verification exercise conducted to authenticate legitimate claims and ensure that the process is transparent, fair, and accountable.
The payments, which are being executed in phases, will be made in three instalments to accommodate the number of beneficiaries and ensure an orderly and sustainable settlement process.
This action is in line with the unwavering commitment of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, Governor of Abia State, to uphold the principles of justice, dignity, equity, and fairness in governance. The Governor has consistently demonstrated a leadership style that prioritises responsibility and integrity, choosing to confront longstanding challenges head-on, even when they originated from past administrations.
By addressing these outstanding obligations, the present administration is reaffirming its belief that public service deserves recognition and respect, and that those who have contributed to the governance of the State should not be left without their lawful entitlements.
