The police command in Ebonyi State has commenced an investigation into the death of the late Amos Ubochi, whose lifeless body was discovered along a bush path in the state.
Channels TV reports that the 70-year-old man was found dead shortly after he endorsed an opposition candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The police command, in a statement on Wednesday by its spokesman, Joshua Ukandu, said Mr Ubochi left his residence on Monday and has not returned.
Mr Ukandu, a superintendent of police, said the command received information on Tuesday that the deceased’s body had been discovered along a bush path within the community.

The spokesman said that upon receiving the report, police operatives visited the scene and evacuated the body to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead.
He added that the command had commenced a comprehensive investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and identify those responsible.
“The command assures members of the public that every necessary step will be taken to get to the root of the incident,” he said.
Mr Ukandu, therefore, urged anyone with useful information to assist the investigation by coming forward.
He also assured members of the public that the investigation would be comprehensive and aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding Mr Ubochi’s death.
He also appealed to residents to cooperate with investigators by providing credible information that could lead to the identification and arrest of those responsible.
The incident has raised concerns, coming at a time of increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
‘Abducted, murdered, and dumped in a stream’
According to the Channels TV report, local sources disclosed that on Monday, 17 August, the septuagenarian had led a council of community elders in a prayer session and public endorsement of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidates within the local government area.
He went missing shortly after the event while returning home, the television station reported.
“Elder Amos Onwe Ubochi was hale and hearty during our consultation on 17 August, where he led other elders in prayers and offered his blessing,” Tochukwu Ogalagu, the APGA candidate for the Ohaukwu/Ebonyi Federal Constituency, was quoted by the station as saying.

“Afterwards, while trekking home alone, he was waylaid, abducted, murdered, and dumped in a stream.”
“His family searched for him throughout the night, only to find his fully clothed body sitting upright in a stream far off the main path to his compound. This killing is a fulfilment of threats issued by desperate political actors in the constituency. The blood of this innocent elder will speak against the perpetrators and their sponsors.”
“I urge all APGA faithful in the constituency to remain calm, vigilant, and resolute as law enforcement agents work to unravel this crime.
“No amount of threats, intimidation, or shedding of innocent blood will stop an idea whose time has come. We extend our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to his family during this painful time,” he said.
