The Nigeria Police Force says it cannot confirm the allegation by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, that armed men laid siege to his residence on Saturday morning.
The Force Headquarters spokesperson, Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this while responding to enquiries over the speaker’s alarm that his home was under attack by armed men at about 6 a.m. on the day of the governorship election.

Mr Iniedu said the police immediately responded to the complaint by deploying officers to the speaker’s residence, but found no evidence to substantiate the allegation.
“We’ve gotten that complaint and mobilised the police complaint unit, and the DPO of that division was directed to proceed to that location, and we could not confirm that allegation at the residence of the speaker. So far, we cannot confirm that,” he said.

300 persons arrested
The police spokesperson, however, said officers conducted a separate operation at the residence of a political stakeholder, during which hundreds of people were taken into custody.
“However, we’ve also made arrests at a political stakeholder’s residence, where we located 300 unaccounted-for persons,” Mr Iniedu said.
He did not identify the political stakeholder or provide further details on the identities of those arrested or the circumstances surrounding the operation.

Mr Iniedu maintained that the security situation across Osun remained calm despite the early morning allegation.
“So far, Osun is peaceful, and we encourage residents to come out en masse to exercise their franchise,” he said.
The police statement comes amid heightened security across the state as voters head to the polls to elect a governor.
Authorities have repeatedly assured residents of adequate security, urging them to participate peacefully in the electoral process and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
