A Nigerian Army officer, Timothy Ajato, has made history, becoming the “first International Fellow to win” the prestigious Frank Kelly Writing Award at the United States Army War College (USAWC), Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
According to a statement posted on the army’s social media handles, the award, regarded as the institution’s highest academic writing honour, was presented to Mr Ajato, a colonel, following his graduation with honours from the Academic Year 2026 programme, where he emerged among the top-performing officers in a class of 365 senior military officers and strategic leaders drawn from the United States and allied countries.

The historic achievement marks the first time an international student has received the Frank Kelly Writing Award since the college’s establishment, the army said, adding that the recognition also confers United States Army War College Foundation Life Membership and other distinguished benefits.
In addition to the award, Mr Ajato earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his academic excellence and expertise in strategic and security affairs.

The army said the officer’s accomplishments extended beyond academic performance, noting that he developed sample model answers that were approved by the college for future Oral Comprehensive Examinations.
The models are expected to serve as reference materials for subsequent student cohorts at the institution.
The United States Army War College is one of the world’s leading military educational institutions, responsible for preparing senior military officers and civilian leaders for strategic-level leadership and national security responsibilities.

The Nigerian Army described Mr Ajato’s achievement as a reflection of the growing reputation of its personnel in international military institutions and a testament to ongoing efforts to develop highly skilled strategic leaders capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.
It said the feat aligns with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, a lieutenant general, which seeks to transform the army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within joint and multi-agency environments.
The army added that the accomplishment highlights its commitment to investing in professional military education and leadership development to enhance national and global peace and security efforts.
