South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign has been dealt a major setback after star striker Lyle Foster was ruled out of the crucial encounter against Rwanda due to injury.
The South African National Football team confirmed the development on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday morning, posting:

Foster, who has been one of Bafana Bafana’s most consistent attacking threats in recent matches, was expected to lead the line in the decisive Group C clash.
His absence is seen as a huge blow for coach Hugo Broos, whose side currently sits second in the group behind Benin, and must beat Rwanda to strengthen their chances of sealing a World Cup ticket.
The news sparked a flurry of reactions from South African fans on social media, many expressing concern over the timing and more importantly the replacement settled for by the Bafana Coach.
On social media, one user, Don Juluka, wrote: Our striker options are Makgopa and Cupido? Together they’ve only scored one goal this entire season. 😭 While Bradley Grobler and Tashreeq Mathews scored 6 and 4 goals respectively.
@Ancho__, wrote: “Sure let the options be Makgopa and Cupido. That would never end well.” Another fan, @BING522, lamented: “Hugo Broos doesn’t take us serious. We are facing a must-win away match, and he’s going with Makgopa as a striker and Cupido as our backup. Cupido hasn’t scored in ages.”
Some supporters were more sarcastic about the decision. @Malebohm commented: “Foster is ruled out and instead of calling an in-form striker, Broos calls Cupido who last scored in February.” Another user, @kevin_majiga, expressed frustration with the coaching crew: “Fadlu our problem. Our assistant coach must not be in the setup. What’s his purpose?”
Others, however, tried to look at the brighter side, with @Allen_be posting a meme of laughter alongside the caption, “Rwanda will cruise nicely.”
The 25-year-old Foster has been a vital part of Bafana Bafana’s setup, combining strength and clinical finishing to provide a reliable attacking option for coach Hugo Broos.
His absence leaves the team reliant on relatively inexperienced forward Ashley Cupido, who is yet to find consistent form at the international level.
Broos remains focused nonetheless as he told reporters in his pre-match conference that Bafana Bafana have a big chance of winning Tuesday’s make-or-break tie.

“We are back mentally, and that is very important. The (team’s) qualities didn’t disappear with the draw against Zimbabwe. It was mentally that we had to recover and turn the button. You can be sure that the button has been turned, and mentality, the team spirit and the belief is there again,” he said.
“This is another amazing thing about this team and after the uppercut we got on Friday, everyone can turn the button and focus on the next job in the shortest period of time. Therefore, I believe again and I’m confident that tomorrow (Tuesday) we will fight for it again, and we will try to win the game, and we will have a big chance to win.”
South Africa sits second in Group C, trailing Benin Republic, and must defeat Rwanda to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
The clash at the iconic Mbombela Stadium now carries even greater pressure, with Bafana needing a strong performance to stay within reach of a first World Cup appearance since 2010.
