Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly on Wednesday night, with substitute Francisco Conceição’s stunning second-half strike condemning the Super Eagles to a narrow defeat in Leiria.
The encounter, which served as Portugal’s final warm-up match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, produced an entertaining contest in which Nigeria matched the hosts for long periods before a moment of brilliance settled the game.

Pedro Neto had given Portugal the lead in the first half, but Akor Adams continued his impressive form in national colours by drawing Nigeria level before the break.
However, Conceição’s superb winner 15 minutes from time ensured Roberto Martinez’s side headed to the World Cup on the back of consecutive victories.

Portugal strike first
Backed by a passionate home crowd at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, Portugal began brightly and looked to utilise the experience of captain Cristiano Ronaldo and midfield orchestrator Bruno Fernandes.
The hosts eventually made their pressure count in the 23rd minute when Neto finished clinically to put Portugal ahead.
Despite falling behind, Nigeria remained composed and increasingly threatened on the counterattack.
Eric Chelle’s side looked particularly dangerous whenever they broke forward, repeatedly exposing spaces behind the Portuguese defence.
Adams responds
The Super Eagles’ persistence paid off in the 38th minute.
Akor Adams showcased his strength and composure, shrugging off the challenge of Portugal captain Rúben Dias before exchanging passes with a teammate and calmly finishing beyond the Portugal goalkeeper.
The goal was Adams’ sixth for Nigeria and capped an impressive first-half display from the forward, who consistently troubled the Portuguese backline.
At halftime, the teams went into the dressing room level at 1-1, with Nigeria arguably the more threatening side during transitions.
Okoye keeps Nigeria alive
Portugal emerged for the second half with renewed energy after manager Roberto Martinez made sweeping changes, introducing several established stars including Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, João Félix, Rúben Neves and Nuno Mendes.
The substitutions immediately lifted the hosts.
Felix nearly restored Portugal’s lead within minutes of the restart, forcing Maduka Okoye into an excellent save before rattling the crossbar moments later.
Ronaldo also had opportunities to find the net but was unable to convert before being substituted in the 64th minute to warm applause from the home supporters.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper Okoye continued to impress, producing several key interventions to deny Portugal and keep the score level.
Conceição’s moment of magic
With both teams making multiple substitutions as the game wore on, the contest appeared to be drifting towards a draw.
But in the 75th minute, Conceição produced the decisive moment.

Collecting the ball near the right edge of the Nigerian penalty area, the winger cut inside onto his left foot before unleashing a powerful strike into the far corner beyond Okoye’s reach.
The goal proved decisive despite Nigeria’s attempts to find a late equaliser.
Portugal controlled possession during the closing stages, while the Super Eagles struggled to create a clear opening against a well-organised defence.
Positives despite defeat
Although the result extended Nigeria’s wait for a win against Portugal, Chelle will take encouragement from several aspects of the performance.
The match also provided another valuable opportunity for the Super Eagles coach to assess both experienced internationals and emerging talents as he continues preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
