The Senate on Thursday confirmed a former House of Representatives member, Ayo Omidiran, as chairman of the Federal Character Commission, alongside 37 commissioners representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The nominees were confirmed after considering the report of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, presented during the plenary by its chairman, Allwell Onyesoh.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the confirmation of the nominees after a majority of senators endorsed the report through a voice vote at the Committee of the Whole.
The commissioners are Peter Eze (Enugu), Obinna Oriaku (Abia), Lawal Roni (Jigawa), Abubakar Bunu (Kebbi), Eludayo Eluyemi (Osun), Bema Madayi (Adamawa), Dora Ebong (Akwa-Ibom), Nnoli Gloria (Anambra), Babangida Gwana (Bauchi), Tonye Okio (Bayelsa), Aligba Tarkende (Benue); and Modu Mustapha (Borno).

Others are Stella Ekpo (Cross River), Ederin Idisi (Delta), Nwokpor Nduka (Ebonyi), Victor Edoror (Edo), Sola Fokanle (Ekiti), Ibrahim Mairiga (Gombe), Jerry Alagbaoso (Imo), Ruth Ango (Kaduna), Muhammad Nayya (Kano), Anas Isah (Katsina) and Bello Eneye (Kogi).
Also confirmed were; Ibrahim Abdullahi (Kwara), Isah Jibrin (Niger), Ajimudu Bola (Ondo), Ayodeji Aleshinloye (Oyo), Pam Bolman (Plateau), Aaron Chukwuemeka (Rivers), Aminu Tambar (Sokoto), Bobboi Kaigama (Taraba), Jibir Maigari (Yobe), Sani Garba (Zamfara) and Solomon Dagami (FCT).
The committee report
Presenting the report, Mr Onyesoh who represents Rivers East Senatorial District, said all the nominees submitted satisfactory credentials and faced no petitions.
The senator added that they appeared before the committee on 13 November and presented their CCB clearances, police reports, DSS vetting documents and curriculum vitae.
He urged his colleagues to support their confirmation.
The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, then moved a motion for the Senate to dissolve into the Committee of the Whole to consider the nominees.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Oyewunmi Olalere, who represents Osun West, said he was familiar with three of the nominees, including the chairman, noting that they all possess strong local and international qualifications.
“I rise to support their nomination. From their résumé, they have held different positions both locally and internationally, and I hereby thank Mr President for finding them worthy for nomination,” he said.
After the consideration at the Committee of the Whole, the Senate returned to plenary where Mr Akpabio put the confirmation to a final vote.

A majority of senators again supported the approval through voice votes.
He subsequently confirmed the nominees and urged them to be diligent and patriotic in their duties.
“Go and serve in the interest of the nation. I congratulate all the nominees and wish them a successful tenure,” Mr Akpabio said.
