The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Samsideen “Shamelon” Oladiti, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), on allegations of assault and murder.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, and posted on the command’s official X page on Friday, the police disclosed that Shamelon allegedly committed the offences on 17 and 18 September, respectively, on Lagos Island.

Mr Oluseyi added that the 55-year-old is currently held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where discreet investigations are ongoing into the two cases.
The statement partly read: “On 17th September 2025 at about 3:00 pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury. The victim was rushed to the hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment.

“On 18th September 2025, at about 11:00 am, another complaint was lodged against the same suspect concerning an incident that occurred on 28th August 2025. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.”
Protest
Mr Oluseyi explained that news of the man’s death, after Shamelon allegedly struck him with a metallic ring, sparked a protest.
He added that the demonstrations escalated when angry sympathisers set fire to two motorcycles belonging to the suspect, causing unrest in the area.
“Following news of the death, sympathisers of the deceased mobilised and staged a violent protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze and causing unrest in the area,” Mr Oluseyi noted.
According to him, the State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led a team comprising mobile officers, conventional police personnel, and tactical squads to the scene.
He explained that the commissioner’s swift intervention restored calm and averted further breakdown of law and order.

Mr Oluseyi added that Mr Jimoh assured residents the suspect was in custody and would be promptly prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure members of the public that justice will be diligently pursued in all the cases against the suspect.
“CP Olohundare Jimoh further appeals to residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and not to take the law into their own hands. He enjoins them to cooperate fully with the police in the ongoing investigations.”
