Rio Ngumoha: Nigerian-born forward becomes Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer

A new star has emerged at Liverpool FC. Rio Ngumoha, a 16-year-old forward of Nigerian and Guadeloupean descent, made history on Monday night by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer after netting a dramatic 100th-minute winner in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Born in Newham, East London, on 29 August 2008, Ngumoha struck deep into stoppage time on his Premier League debut, sealing an unforgettable win for Arne Slot’s side.

At 16 years and 361 days, he also became the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history, behind James Vaughan, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney.

Ngumoha began his football journey at Chelsea’s renowned Cobham academy, where he developed into one of England’s brightest attacking prospects.

In 2024, Liverpool secured his signature, convinced of his exceptional potential.

The teenager has a rich heritage — his father is Nigerian and his mother Guadeloupean, giving him both Nigerian and French nationalities.

Eligible to represent Nigeria, France, or England at the senior level, Ngumoha has so far played for England’s youth teams.

He made his debut for the England U15S in 2023, represented the U16S later that year, and joined the England U17 setup in October 2024.

He was also part of the squad for the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

Ngumoha’s historic moment

Liverpool looked in control when Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring in the 35th minute, followed by Hugo Ekitike’s strike just after the restart.

Newcastle, reduced to 10 men after Anthony Gordon’s red card, fought back to 2-2 through Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula, setting up a tense finale.

In the dying seconds, Ngumoha — introduced late in the game — calmly slotted home the winning goal, sending Liverpool’s fans into wild celebrations.

From debutant to match-winner, his rise has been instant and breathtaking.

Arne Slot’s Reaction

In his post-match press conference, Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience and hailed Ngumoha’s composure under pressure:

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere and for us to stay strong in that environment for so long means more to me than any 5-0 win. Tonight had nothing to do with tactics or good football; it was about character and fight.”
