The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the creation of two new area commands and the upgrade of five police stations to divisional status in Benue State, in what authorities say is a response to the state’s deepening security challenges.
According to the police, the decision followed an appraisal of recent operations which revealed “geographical gaps” between security formations and vulnerable communities across troubled local government areas of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Benue, Udeme Edet, announced the development in a statement on Wednesday.
“The two Area Commands created are Daudu Area Command and Naka Area Command, while the five police stations that have been upgraded to police Divisions are Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo and Agan Police Divisions,” Ms Edet said.

According to her, Daudu Area Command will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan police divisions, while Naka Area Command will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo divisions.
Ms Edet explained that the restructuring was aimed at boosting the police response to security threats in the state.

“This adjustment will assist the command in policing troubled areas with large and difficult terrains. These Divisions will also ensure quick resolution of conflict between farmers and herders and facilitate quick response to distress calls,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the inspector-general for what he described as a “crucial intervention” designed to strengthen policing in the state.
Mr Emenari also lauded the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, for his support of security agencies in the ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property in Benue.
