Nigerian football legend Augustine “Jay Jay” Okocha has shared the highs and lows of his remarkable career.
For Okocha, the defining moment of his career came not in Europe’s grand stadiums but in Atlanta in 1996, when the Super Eagles stunned the world to win Olympic gold.

Speaking on an exclusive episode of The Long Form, recorded during the SportsBiz Africa Forum in Kigali, Okocha spoke about his remarkable career, from struggling as a teenager in Germany to becoming one of the most admired players of his generation.
“My highest moment in football was winning the olympics. You only get one chance and we won the gold and it’s in record because we are the first African football team to win. It is special to me because of what we went through.”

Behind that triumph was a story of hardship and sacrifice that few outside the team ever knew.
“People only see the only product and not the process. We were in camp in America and we woke up one day and our training coach was gone. They took the bus with the spare key because the FA hadn’t paid for the bus to take us. And then for a week the hotel was giving us the same meal, rice and sauce with chicken. For dinner. We went to them and say why aren’t you changing our menu they said we should be glad we are still here because our FA hasn’t paid for the food and accommodation. Few of us had to bring our card and pay for accommodation and then went and rented minivans to stay in camp. It shows the desire we had.”
The triumph in Atlanta remains etched in history as Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal. For Okocha, it was proof that passion and resilience could overcome the toughest circumstances.

The lowest lows
While the Olympic gold remains a shining memory, Okocha admitted that his career also had painful moments that tested his resolve.
“My lowest happened in two occasions. When I got relegated in Frankfurt in 1996. I felt bad. Sometimes we develop this winning habit and with Frankfurt we were always competing to win the league and all of a sudden they brought this manager that just destroyed the team and I could see it coming but I had no voice. I couldn’t say anything. When it happened I felt bad but then I said to myself it’s time to move on and that was when I left.”
A decade later came another disappointment, this time on the international stage.
“Another low moment was when we failed to qualify for 2006 World Cup which was in Germany. That would have been my fourth World Cup.”
Missing out on the tournament was a bitter blow, particularly as it was to be staged in Germany, the country where his professional journey had begun.
Early struggles in Germany
That journey started in 1990 when Okocha arrived in Germany on a visitor’s visa. With no academy background, little money, and no grasp of the language, his first challenge was simply survival.
“It was a tough period. Maybe the most difficult time of my life,” he once recalled. “My challenges were off the pitch—the food, the language, the culture.”
To stay afloat, he worked in the mornings from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. before heading to training. His first amateur contract offered little financial reward, and even when he signed his first professional deal in 1991—worth 5,000 Deutschmarks—he resisted the temptation to spend lavishly.
“You can’t wash away poverty with champagne,” Okocha explained. “You can only wash away poverty when you are able to take up the responsibilities waiting for you.”
Those responsibilities included helping family and friends back in Nigeria. For him, they were never a burden. “They are part of your budget. You put them in your plan. But you make it clear they have a limited time—you’re trying to set them up, and they have to make it count.”
Finding his identity
On the pitch, Okocha’s flair stood out in a football culture defined by discipline and structure.
“Sometimes my mistakes were seen as me joking with the ball, because they weren’t used to my style,” he said. “But I knew I needed an identity. If I played like one of them, what was the need for them to sign me?”
That identity, combining creativity with hard work, soon earned him admiration. “They admired not only the flair but the hard work I was putting in—my willingness to learn and improve. Once I used my flair to win matches or create chances, they encouraged me to continue, in certain areas of the pitch.”
Stardom in Europe
From those early struggles, Okocha’s career soared. At Eintracht Frankfurt, he lit up the Bundesliga with dazzling goals that remain highlights to this day. A move to Paris Saint-Germain followed, where he played alongside some of the game’s biggest names, including Ronaldinho.
Later, in England, he became a cult hero at Bolton Wanderers, captaining the side and helping them secure their Premier League status. Fans at the Reebok Stadium still sing his name, testimony to the joy he brought them.
A contrast between Africa and Europe
Even as his career blossomed, Okocha never lost sight of the challenges of being an African player.
“That’s the difference between Europe and Africa. Back then the administrators didn’t see the need for it. The difference was that Europeans were ahead. Once they know that you’ve qualified that you’re going to need a camping site then they start arranging for it. We always leave our things last minute and then maybe the government hasn’t realized the budget but we have to go so they bundle us to the camp in hope that they are coming in three days to sort the bills.”
For his generation, sacrifice was the price of representing Nigeria.
“It has changed but back then, that’s the difference between our generation and this generation. You can spend your money to play for your nation. Sometimes we buy our tickets to come and we don’t get our refunds.”
Lessons from the journey
Okocha’s Igbo background shaped how he approached both football and life. “The area where I grew up, the tribe—we are business inclined,” he said. That mindset guided his negotiations, often without an exclusive agent. “I was a bit more like a freelancer. I focused on making as much as I could to secure my future and my family’s future.”

Even at the height of his career, discipline was key. “My contract money is for investment,” he explained, adding that luxuries like cars and watches came only from bonuses and endorsements.
Today, Okocha believes African football must adopt the same professionalism that lifted his career. “Football is a big global business. It’s good that we are seeing it from that perspective.” Rwanda’s progress, he noted, shows what is possible: “If you have the drive, nothing is impossible—even a small nation can set the pace.”
A career of resilience
Looking back, Okocha sees his highs and lows as part of one journey. From Olympic glory to relegation heartbreak, he believes resilience was the defining factor.
“When you have a vision, when you have a dream, and if you’re strong mentally, nothing that is thrown at you can stop you,” he said.
