The United States Mission in Nigeria has drawn public attention — and sparked controversy — after it accused some Nigerian government officials of fiscal recklessness amid widespread economic hardship in the country.
In a post made Tuesday on its official Facebook page under the hashtag #TransparencyTuesday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria criticised Nigerian leaders for what it described as poor prioritisation of public funds.

The post referenced a report by The Africa Report, which exposed how some governors are allegedly spending billions on new government buildings while asking citizens to endure austerity.
“While Nigerians are urged to endure economic hardship ‘like labor pains,’ some governors are splurging billions on new government houses,” the U.S. Mission said.

Citing Nigerian civic organizations, the post continued: “BudgIT warns that ‘instead of funding schools, clinics, or agriculture, leaders prioritize buildings they barely use.’”
“Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre adds: ‘There is more money, little accountability, and no priority.’”
The embassy concluded, “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
The post quickly went viral, with many Nigerians praising the U.S. for openly expressing concerns about what they see as worsening governance and misplaced priorities.
Facebook user Ima Ogiku commented, “We sincerely appreciate this comment from the US Mission in Nigeria … It is really important to put more pressure on the Nigerian government to drastically reduce corruption and curb the ravaging insecurity. Muchas gracias!”
Another user, Nwachukwu Iloha, wrote, “This is so refreshing… When your government supports popular politicians during elections, then you have less Nigerians knocking down your doors for immigration. Happy Nigerians mean less immigrants.”
However, not all responses were favourable. Some users criticised the U.S. Mission for allegedly breaching diplomatic norms by directly commenting on internal governance matters in Nigeria.

Esekutive Effemmsy Sam noted, “If the U.S. Mission in Nigeria would reject Nigerian criticism of its internal affairs, then it must also respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and refrain from overstepping under the guise of advocacy… Sovereignty demands both responsibility and respect on all sides.”
Adeola Isaac Adeogun called the post “reckless” and “out of order,” saying such concerns should be raised through proper diplomatic channels, not public social media platforms. “This isn’t diplomacy nor standard norms,” he said.
Another commenter, Chibuike Paschal Agbams, echoed the concern: “Why is the U.S. mission in Nigeria interfering in the internal affairs of Nigeria? Respect our sovereignty and keep off our internal affairs.”
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has not responded to the backlash, but the post remains live on its Facebook page as of Wednesday afternoon.
