Veteran entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has described marriage as a continuous process of “management,” saying disagreements remain a regular feature of his relationship with his wife, Diane Oputa, after nearly five decades together.
Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM, the 75-year-old said no marriage is free of conflict, adding that the ability to resolve disputes is what sustains long-term unions.

“All marriages are management, including my own,” Mr Oputa said.
“Me and my wife, we are like Tom and Jerry now. No day we won’t quarrel, and no day we won’t fix the quarrel.”

Marriage after 48 years
Mr Oputa, popularly known as the “Area Fada,” said he and his wife will mark 48 years of marriage this year.
Reflecting on the realities of a long-term relationship, he joked about spending nearly five decades with one partner.
“This year is going to be my 48 years of marriage. Just one woman. Ah, the thing is boring now. If every day you eat the same good soup, you won’t like it like that,” he said.
When the programme hosts asked whether he was encouraging infidelity, the entertainer rejected the description.
“Not cheating — outsourcing,” he replied jokingly.
Pressed to explain what he meant, Mr Oputa declined to elaborate, saying the presenters would have to “pay for lectures and tuition.”
Speaking on marriage
Mr Oputa has frequently spoken publicly about marriage and relationships.
In 2022, he tweeted that he was becoming tired of marriage and considered walking away, a remark that generated debate online. He later clarified that marriage requires constant work and that his comments were intended to challenge the idea of a perfect union.

Over the years, his wife has also openly discussed the challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship, often describing marriage as a commitment that requires patience, understanding and compromise.
Mr Oputa married Diane, popularly known as Lady D, in 1979 after the collapse of his first marriage. PREMIUM TIMES previously reported that the couple renewed their vows in 2018 during a ceremony officiated by Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah.
His latest remarks add to a long record of public comments on marriage, relationships and family life that have made him one of Nigeria’s most outspoken entertainers.
