My 30th Wedding

My 30th Wedding

Movie Review: Beyond 10 million views, ‘My 30th Wedding’ offers little surprise

Bimbo and Timini’s familiar chemistry sustains the romantic comedy, but its manufactured conflicts, predictable choices and overly tidy resolution leave little room for surprise.

From ‘Breaded Life (2021)’ to Big Love (2023) and now ‘My 30th Wedding’, Bimbo Ademoye and Timini Egbuson have become a familiar on-screen pair, repeatedly drawing audiences into romances built on their easy chemistry.

Their latest outing, however, offers more of what fans already know than anything particularly new.

In ‘My 30th Wedding’, Ademoye plays a successful wedding planner racing against her 30th birthday to find a husband. In contrast, Egbuson plays a wealthy widower whose complicated family life threatens to derail their budding romance.

Written and produced by Ademoye, the 2026 romantic comedy capitalises on the actors’ established appeal, combining romance, family drama and comic moments in a polished but predictable Nollywood package.

Released on Bimbo Ademoye TV on 1 October, the film crossed 10 million YouTube views in roughly 48 hours, underscoring strong audience interest in the Ademoye-Egbuson pairing.

But while their chemistry remains one of the film’s strongest attractions, ‘My 30th Wedding’ ultimately settles for a familiar love story, relying on manufactured misunderstandings and an overly tidy resolution rather than taking its romance in a more unexpected direction.

However, the film’s publicity campaign had already generated considerable curiosity before its release, particularly through a series of carefully staged “pre-wedding” photographs featuring Ademoye and Egbuson. The images briefly led fans to speculate that the two actors had married in real life.

That publicity stunt captured the central strength of My 30th Wedding: it understands its stars’ appeal and knows exactly what its audience wants from them. Yet, beyond the impressive numbers and attractive packaging, the film is a largely conventional romantic comedy, but unwilling to take many risks.

Plot

Ademoye plays Elamosi Ogbeta, a successful wedding planner who runs Xtra Brides and More.

After planning 25 weddings for other people, Elamosi has privately set herself a deadline: she must get married by her 30th birthday. Her determination is fuelled partly by her mother’s persistent matchmaking and the social pressure surrounding her unmarried status.

Among the men in her orbit is Osaze (Bryan Okoye), the son of a family friend. Unlike the complications that later define her relationship with Lekan, Osaze offers Elamosi something simpler: straightforward affection and an uncomplicated willingness to love her.

But her life takes a different turn when Lekan Wellington (Egbuson), a wealthy technology entrepreneur and widower, hires her to organise a memorial gala for his late wife. The relationship begins with professional friction before gradually developing into attraction.

Lekan, however, comes with baggage. He is a father, and his daughter Grace is protective of him and suspicious of Elamosi’s place in their lives.

The developing romance is further complicated by class differences, family expectations, misunderstandings, and a manufactured betrayal that eventually threatens to destroy the relationship. How long will this love relationship last?

Review

The film’s strongest element is undoubtedly the chemistry between Ademoye and Egbuson. Their performances give the romance much of its credibility. Their exchanges are playful without becoming excessively theatrical, while their quieter moments communicate attraction more effectively than some of the film’s dialogue.

Ademoye, in particular, gives Elamosi enough vulnerability to prevent her from becoming merely another ambitious, unmarried Nollywood heroine racing against a biological or social clock.

Egbuson also plays Lekan with restraint. His character is wealthy and accomplished, but the film does not make him completely invulnerable. His relationship with his daughter adds an emotional complication that goes beyond the conventional rich-man-meets-working-woman setup.

Gloria Anozie-Young, as Elamosi’s anxious and matchmaking mother, understands the comic possibilities of a parent who believes marriage is the ultimate solution to her daughter’s problems.

Elamosi is successful professionally, financially independent, and capable of running her own business. Yet those achievements do little to protect her from the constant question: ‘When are you getting married?’

The film captures the peculiar pressure unmarried women face when their professional accomplishments are still treated as secondary to their relationship status. It also explores another difficult question: what happens when love comes with responsibilities that already existed before the relationship?

For Elamosi, falling in love with him therefore means entering an existing family structure. The film’s recurring idea that “love marries a person and the people they love” is arguably its most interesting observation.

Unfortunately, the film does not explore that idea deeply enough. My 30th Wedding’s biggest weakness is its reliance on manufactured conflict.

The central breakdown in Elamosi and Lekan’s relationship is driven largely by a conspiracy involving the household staff. It is an old-fashioned romantic-comedy device that feels increasingly artificial as the film progresses.

More troubling is how quickly Lekan accepts the version of events presented to him.

For a man who has gradually developed feelings for Elamosi, his readiness to believe the worst of her weakens the emotional foundation of their relationship.

Once the deception is exposed, the consequences are also surprisingly limited.

The film moves quickly to forgiveness and reconciliation, leaving little room to examine the damage mistrust causes.

Osaze’s character presents another missed opportunity. Because he offers Elamosi a genuinely uncomplicated alternative, the story could have had greater emotional tension with a real romantic triangle. Instead, he largely functions as a convenient contrast to Lekan rather than a serious competitor for Elamosi’s heart.

The result is that the eventual romantic choice feels predictable long before the film reaches its conclusion.

The final stretch is perhaps the film’s most debatable section. Some viewers may find the resolution satisfying because it delivers precisely what a romantic comedy promises: reconciliation, emotional closure and a happy ending. Others may question whether the problems raised by the film have been resolved too neatly.

Stylistically, My 30th Wedding does not attempt to reinvent the Nigerian romantic comedy. Instead, it improves on a familiar formula. It has the wealthy man, the independent woman, family pressure, misunderstandings, social expectations, comic relief, emotional confrontation, and eventual reconciliation.

What distinguishes it is Ademoye’s performance, Egbuson’s screen presence, and their chemistry. But that same familiarity ultimately limits it.

Verdict: 7/10
