Viktoria Plzeň have made a bold statement of intent, officially completing the signing of Nigerian forward Salim Fago Lawal on a three-and-a-half-year deal, a move that makes the 23-year-old the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Lawal arrives in the Czech Republic as the direct replacement for fellow Nigerian Rafiu Durosinmi, who left Plzeň earlier this month for Italian side Pisa in a €9 million transfer. With that departure creating a clear void in attack, Plzeň moved decisively to secure a forward capable of sustaining their domestic and European ambitions.

A record deal with big expectations
According to Transfermarkt, Viktoria Plzeň paid €2.4 million to Croatian side NK Istra 1961, with a further €0.6 million in performance-related add-ons, taking the potential total to €3 million. Istra have also smartly retained 10 per cent of any future transfer fee, underlining their belief in Lawal’s upward trajectory.
The deal places Lawal at the very top of Plzeň’s transfer spending, ahead of previous high-profile signings such as Karel Spáčil (€1.6m), Svetozar Marković (€1.5m) and Ricardinho (€1.2m).

Explaining the club’s thinking, sporting director Martin Vozábal made it clear that Lawal was signed not just to fill a gap, but to raise standards in attack.
“After the departure of Rafiu Durosinmi, we wanted to increase competition in our attack, which is fulfilled with the arrival of Salim Fago Lawal,” Mr Vozábal said.
“He is a pacey player who can play both as a central striker and on the wing. We are glad the transfer has now been completed and can count on him for the weekend league match.”
Lawal’s ability to operate across the front line offers Plzeň tactical flexibility, especially as they balance domestic title ambitions with European commitments.
From Croatia to the Continental stage
Lawal joins Plzeň after an impressive spell with NK Istra 1961, where he made 64 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing two assists in the Croatian top flight. His performances earned him wider recognition, culminating in his Super Eagles debut at AFCON 2025, a tournament that further raised his profile.
Speaking through the club’s official website, Lawal admitted Plzeň’s European pedigree played a major role in his decision.
“I know Viktoria mainly from their European performances, where they have consistently delivered great results. This offer really attracted me,” he said.
“I see it as a step forward in my career, and I want to help the club as much as possible.”
Fresh from international duty, the Nigerian forward believes he is ready to hit the ground running.

“Since I was with the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations, I think I am well-prepared and will want to be fully available to the coaches immediately. I am looking forward to my first training session and meeting my new teammates.”
