President Tinubu hails Amusan after silver medal at World Championships

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan after she won a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

In a statement from the State House, the President praised the world record holder for once again lifting the nation’s spirit with her performance. “Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable. Her achievement is a source of national pride,” President Tinubu said.

Amusan, 28, clocked 12.29 seconds to finish second in Tuesday’s final, narrowly behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who struck gold in a national record of 12.24s. Grace Stark of the United States took bronze with 12.34s, while Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44s.

Although she was bidding to reclaim the title she won in 2022 in Oregon—where she became the first Nigerian and African to win the 100m hurdles crown—Amusan’s silver medal in Tokyo marks her second podium finish at the World Championships. It also reinforces her status as one of the most consistent athletes in her event globally.

Beyond her medals, Amusan remains the world record holder at 12.12s and has collected multiple Diamond League titles, alongside a Commonwealth Games gold.

Her latest achievement has further strengthened her legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest athletes.
