The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), through its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, and TopTier Sports Management have announced plans for a landmark Legends Football Match to celebrate Nigeria’s celebrated mid-1990s football generation.
The match, scheduled for 8 November at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan Lagos, will form part of the CANEX WKND 2026 programme and bring together football icons from Nigeria, Africa and beyond.

The event will mark 30 years since Nigeria’s historic 1996 Atlanta Olympic triumph, while also celebrating the generation that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Temwa Gondwe, Director of Creatives and Diaspora at Afreximbank, said the initiative was designed to celebrate the achievements of a generation that helped reshape perceptions of African football while creating new conversations around the future of sports and the creative economy.

“The 1996 Super Eagles did more than win Olympic gold; they re-wrote the global narrative, proving to the world that African talent is an unstoppable force,” Mr Gondwe said.
He said the Legends Game would demonstrate the connection between sports, entertainment and culture while providing “a strategic and formidable platform to discuss the future commercialisation and empowerment of African athletes and creatives globally.”
Chichi Nwoko, Founder and CEO of TopTier Sports Management and What Media Group, said the initiative was both a tribute to the players and an opportunity to examine how athletes can be better supported during and after their careers.

“Thirty years ago, a generation of Nigerian footballers showed the world what African talent was capable of. The Legends Football Game is our way of saying thank you to them, and our chance to ask harder questions: what are we building for this generation and the next?” Ms Nwoko said.
“We want to build the infrastructure that lets African athletes turn a playing career into a lasting one, on and off the field; this is a huge gap that must be addressed. That’s what this partnership with Afreximbank seeks to achieve.”
Amokachi seeks stronger welfare for legends
The significance of the initiative was echoed by former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi, one of the players who featured prominently for Nigeria during the period being celebrated.
Speaking after the unveiling at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Amokachi said the Legends Game would celebrate the 1994-96 generation and provide an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of players who helped put Nigerian football on the global map.
“Afreximbank and TopTier Sports Management have come up with a Legends Game to celebrate the 1994-96 generation of footballers in Nigeria and across the continent,” he said.
But for Amokachi, the occasion should go beyond nostalgia.
He appealed to corporate organisations to use their corporate social responsibility programmes to establish sustainable welfare initiatives for former footballers and other athletes.
“The corporate social responsibility of having a pension scheme for footballers, not only footballers but athletes generally, is something that is done everywhere in the world,” he said.
“Ninety-nine per cent of my colleagues from my generation are struggling. Only a few of us are doing a bit well, and if we had that kind of support, it would definitely go a long way.”
Amokachi said the support of the media, corporate bodies and sponsors would be crucial to making the November event successful.
“There are a lot of faces missing today because this is a Nigerian and African legends’ event. We need everybody to come on board to help make this a very memorable first week of November,” he said.
Emotional reunion for golden generation
The announcement produced a memorable reunion at the Lagos Continental Hotel, where Amokachi was joined by several other members of Nigeria’s celebrated football generation, including Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal, Alloy Agu, Ben Iroha, Finidi George and Victor Ikpeba.
The gathering quickly turned into an emotional trip down memory lane as the former internationals exchanged stories, laughed over old dressing-room experiences and remembered the teams and moments that defined one of the most successful periods in Nigerian football.
The 1994 team won Nigeria’s second Africa Cup of Nations title in Tunisia before reaching the round of 16 at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Two years later, Nigeria’s Olympic team, built around many of the same players, stunned the football world in Atlanta by winning the men’s football gold medal after defeating Mexico, Brazil and Argentina during the knockout stages.
The former players at the Lagos gathering commended the initiative and emphasised the need for more programmes that recognise their generation and provide meaningful support for Nigeria’s sporting legends.
Bet9ja named headline sponsor
Bet9ja has been unveiled as the headline sponsor of the Legends Football Match, while the organisers have called on more corporate bodies to come on board and support the initiative.
The organisers said the match would form part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank’s platform for advancing Africa’s creative and cultural industries.
They added that the event would help position Lagos as a leading destination for sports, entertainment and creative activities while attracting football fans, creatives, media organisations and international visitors.
