Transfers: Awoniyi seals Coventry move, links up with Onyeka

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed a permanent move to Coventry City from Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old striker reportedly joins Coventry in a deal worth around £9 million, bringing an end to his four-year spell at Forest.

The move also sees Awoniyi reunite with Nigeria teammate Frank Onyeka, who is already part of the Coventry squad.

Coventry confirmed the transfer in a statement, describing the Nigerian as a player with extensive Premier League experience.

Awoniyi spent the last four seasons with Forest, scoring 21 league goals in 90 appearances and 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions.

He began his professional career at Liverpool before gaining experience on loan with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and KAA Gent.

The striker later moved to the Bundesliga, spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Mainz 05 before joining Union Berlin on a temporary basis the following campaign.

His performances persuaded Union Berlin to sign him permanently in 2021, and he enjoyed the most prolific season of his career during the 2021-22 campaign, scoring 20 goals, including four in the UEFA Conference League.

His form attracted Nottingham Forest, who signed him in 2022 for a club-record fee.

Awoniyi scored 11 goals in his first season at the City Ground, helping Forest avoid relegation in their first campaign back in the Premier League and reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

He was also part of the Forest side that finished seventh and qualified for European football in the 2024-25 season.

At the international level, Awoniyi has won 10 caps for Nigeria and scored twice for the Super Eagles.

Speaking about his move to Coventry, Awoniyi said: “I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City.

“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates, I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”

The move gives Awoniyi a fresh start as Coventry prepare for life in the Premier League following their promotion from the Championship.
