The winners of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will receive a minimum prize money of ₦1 billion, the biggest financial reward ever offered in Nigerian domestic football, following a series of far-reaching reforms unveiled by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The announcement was made on Tuesday by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko after a high-level strategic meeting with the commission’s leadership and the NFF at the NSC headquarters in Abuja. Mr Dikko described the decision as part of a broader plan to transform Nigerian football through improved player welfare, stricter professional standards, and increased commercial value for the domestic league.

Under the proposed prize structure, the NPFL runners-up will receive ₦500 million, while the third-placed club will earn ₦300 million, subject to final confirmation by league authorities.
“A major highlight of the meeting was that the champions of the 2026/27 NPFL season will receive a minimum prize money of ₦1 billion,” Mr Dikko said.

He added that the reforms reflected a shared commitment between the NSC and NFF to elevate Nigerian football and ensure sustainable success across all levels of the game.
“I want to thank NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and the General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, for a very productive engagement. The issues discussed are fundamental to the growth and development of Nigerian football,” Dikko stated.
Beyond prize money, stakeholders agreed that club licensing regulations would be strictly enforced, with clubs expected to meet maximum professional standards rather than merely satisfy minimum requirements.
“Professional football must be run professionally. If strict enforcement means fewer clubs qualify initially, then so be it. What is important is raising standards across the board,” Mr Dikko added.
To support the reforms, the NSC and league authorities also agreed on a substantial intervention package to improve infrastructure, governance, and compliance across the league.
Another major outcome of the meeting was the approval of a proposed minimum wage of ₦2 million for NPFL players, a move designed to improve player welfare, encourage professionalism, and strengthen the domestic football ecosystem.
The meeting also reviewed preparations for the Super Falcons ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. POfficials agreed on measures to improve funding, player welfare, and remuneration as the ten-time African champions prepare to begin camping in Nigeria before travelling to Morocco for friendly matches.
NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade praised the growing collaboration among football stakeholders.
“Together, we are transforming the way sports are administered in this country, and today’s meeting demonstrates our collective determination to build a stronger future for Nigerian football,” he said.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau echoed that sentiment, stressing the importance of partnership ahead of key international assignments, including WAFCON and the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
“Whatever we intend to achieve in Nigerian football requires collaboration, and today’s meeting was both timely and productive,” Gusau said.
The sweeping reforms are expected to significantly raise the profile, competitiveness, and commercial appeal of Nigerian football while providing greater financial security for clubs, coaches, and players.
