Zadok Yohanna could face an anxious wait over his participation in Nigeria’s upcoming Unity Cup campaign after Allmänna Idrottsklubben (AIK) confirmed they have yet to decide if they will release the winger for international duty.
The Nigerian youngster has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the new Swedish league season, producing a string of impressive performances that have quickly elevated his profile both in Scandinavia and within the Super Eagles setup.

Yohanna’s explosive form earned him a maiden invitation from Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle ahead of the invitational tournament, with the winger viewed as one of the exciting attacking options being monitored for the future of the national team.

AIK reserve right to block Yohanna’s release
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, AIK recruitment manager Miika Takkula confirmed that the club had officially received Nigeria’s invitation for the player.
The Swedish club hierarchy, however, are expected to internally review the request before making a final decision on whether Yohanna will be allowed to join the Super Eagles camp.
“We have received the official invitation. Tomorrow we will go through it internally and then make a decision. We also have matches. We will go through it and then make a decision,” Mr Takkula said.
The AIK official further stressed that the club believes it has the legal right to retain the player, as the Unity Cup falls outside FIFA’s official international calendar.
That means clubs are not automatically obligated to release players for the competition.
“We will go through it internally tomorrow and get a complete picture of everything,” he added.
“Then, as you mention, we have every right to keep him here. It is not an official date (national team date in the international calendar), and I think it is in our hands.”
The situation now places Nigeria in a delicate position as the Super Eagles continue preparations for the tournament while also attempting to integrate several emerging players into Eric Chelle’s evolving squad.
