At this stage of the season, survival is not promised, it is earned. And on a ruthless night at the Stadium of Light, Nottingham Forest delivered a performance that felt like a declaration.
For Nigerian duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina, it was a night where impact met intent; one from the start, the other off the bench, as Forest dismantled Sunderland 5-0 to edge closer to Premier League survival.

Pressure, Form, and the fight to stay alive
The stakes were clear long before kickoff.
Forest arrived knowing that every point, every performance, could define their fate in the Premier League run-in. Despite signs of resurgence in recent weeks, the margin for error remained thin. Sunderland, buoyed by strong form and home support, were expected to test that resolve.

Igor Jesus opened the scoring, Morgan Gibbs-White added control and craft, and Chris Wood delivered cutting edge. A Trai Hume own goal compounded the damage, leaving the hosts stunned and the game effectively over before halftime.
Amid the attacking dominance, Aina’s contribution was just as decisive. Defensively composed, positionally sharp, and relentless in his duels, he shut down Sunderland’s wide threats and anchored a backline that refused to bend.
Game management and a late Nigerian signature
The second half saw a shift in tempo. Forest moved into control mode, managing the game with discipline rather than urgency.
Sunderland thought they had found a way back in the 61st minute through Daniel Ballard, but the effort was ruled out for offside, a moment that summed up their night.
Then came Awoniyi.
Introduced in the 88th minute, the Nigerian forward wasted no time imposing himself. Sharp, direct, and purposeful, he brought fresh energy to a game already decided.

Deep into stoppage time, he added his signature moment, a clever pass into the path of Elliot Anderson, who finished clinically to complete the 5-0 rout.

While Awoniyi made his mark late, Aina’s influence stretched across the full 90 minutes. Nine defensive contributions, 56 touches, and 70 percent passing accuracy underlined a performance built on control and consistency.
More importantly, the result carries weight beyond the scoreline.
Forest now sit on 39 points, one short of the symbolic 40-point mark that traditionally guarantees Premier League survival. After weeks of uncertainty, the path is now clear.
One more push. One more result.
And for Awoniyi and Aina, whose journeys have been defined by resilience and timing, this could yet be the moment where survival turns into statement, and pressure into legacy.
