Behind every major industrial project are engineers, fabricators, technicians and specialist companies whose work often attracts little public attention but is essential to the economy. Their ability to design, manufacture, maintain and repair critical infrastructure can influence how much a country depends on external suppliers, how much value it retains locally and the opportunities it creates for its workforce.

For Nigeria, where the development of local industrial capacity remains an important economic priority, this presents a fundamental question: how can the country build and sustain the technical capabilities needed to support its ambitions?

It is a question that Dorman Long Engineering Limited has been part of answering for more than seven decades.

Established in 1949, the company has evolved alongside Nigeria’s industrial development, working across structural steel fabrication, oil and gas infrastructure, galvanising and asset management. Today, under the chairmanship of Dr ‘Timi Austen-Peters and the executive leadership of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Chris Ijeli, an engineer, the company operates in an environment where domestic engineering expertise remains important to the development of the country’s industrial base.

The Importance of Building Local Capability

Nigeria’s oil and gas, power, telecommunications and manufacturing industries require an extensive network of engineering services and industrial infrastructure. These range from steel structures and specialised equipment to corrosion protection, installation and the maintenance of operating facilities.

Where these capabilities are available locally, projects have greater opportunities to draw on domestic expertise, develop local supply chains and create work for Nigerian technical professionals. The benefits extend beyond the immediate project to the wider ecosystem of suppliers, contractors and skilled workers.

Dorman Long Engineering’s history reflects the development of some of these capabilities within Nigeria. Its early work included structural steel fabrication for bridges, factories and warehouses. Over time, the business expanded into more specialised engineering applications, including pressure vessels, offshore structures and equipment for oil and gas operations.

The company’s experience illustrates an often-overlooked dimension of industrial development: building local capacity is not simply about establishing facilities. It requires the accumulation of technical knowledge, investment in equipment, the development of skilled personnel and the ability to deliver work that meets demanding industry requirements.

For Dr ‘Timi Austen-Peters, Chairman of Dorman Long Engineering, the wider significance of this capability lies in its relationship with Nigeria’s economic development.

“National development requires more than ambition; it requires the capacity to execute. When we develop engineering expertise, strengthen local manufacturing and build businesses that can undertake increasingly complex projects, we create opportunities for Nigerian talent and retain more value within the economy. That is why the development of indigenous engineering capability matters beyond any individual company or project,” Austen-Peters said.

The challenge, however, is to ensure that existing capabilities continue to develop. As industrial requirements change and projects become more technically demanding, engineering companies must invest in their operations, maintain quality standards and remain responsive to the needs of their customers.

From Structural Steel to Complex Industrial Projects

Dorman Long Engineering’s project portfolio provides examples of how Nigerian engineering capabilities have developed over time.

One of its more recent projects was the fabrication of the Madu Conductor Support Platform, a 1,300-metric-tonne offshore structure delivered entirely by the company at its facility at the Nigerian Naval Dockyard in Lagos.

The project required the coordination of engineering, fabrication, quality management and other technical activities associated with the delivery of a large offshore structure. Beyond the physical scale of the platform, the project demonstrated the range of capabilities required to undertake specialised fabrication work within Nigeria.

The company has also undertaken work involving modularised separators for the Nigerian Agip Oil Company’s Irri Flow Station, offshore platforms and asset-management services for oil and gas facilities.

In another example, Dorman Long Engineering reported completing statutory inspections, recertification and asset-integrity restoration work on the Bonga floating production, storage and offloading facility in 22 days in November 2022, against an original 30-day schedule.

Such projects illustrate the breadth of expertise required to support industrial operations, from manufacturing and fabrication to the inspection and maintenance of critical assets.

They also highlight why engineering capability is an important component of industrial resilience. The ability to source specialised services locally can give operators additional options when planning projects, maintaining facilities and managing delivery schedules.

For Nigeria, the opportunity is to continue developing businesses that can meet these requirements while competing on technical competence, quality, safety and reliability.

The Leadership Behind the Next Phase

For an engineering company with a history spanning more than 75 years, maintaining relevance requires both long-term strategic direction and effective operational execution.

As Chairman, Austen-Peters provides board-level leadership and oversight, while Ijeli leads the company’s executive operations. Their respective responsibilities reflect the strategic and technical dimensions of sustaining an established engineering business in a changing market.

Ijeli brings more than three decades of experience across project management, sales engineering, contracting, construction, fabrication and project-support services. His experience spans oil and gas, manufacturing and related industries, including work involving flow stations, gas-handling facilities, structural steelwork and pressure vessels.

The operational demands of the sector are considerable. Engineering projects require careful coordination of people, materials, equipment, suppliers and delivery schedules, alongside compliance with technical specifications and safety requirements. For companies serving energy and industrial operators, maintaining these standards is central to delivering work reliably.

For Ijeli, the development of Nigeria’s engineering base must therefore be matched by the ability to execute projects to the standards expected by clients.

“Local content becomes meaningful when Nigerian companies can demonstrate the technical competence, facilities and delivery discipline required to undertake complex work. Our industry must continue to build these capabilities, develop its people and invest in the standards that allow local engineering businesses to compete effectively,” Ijeli said.

The Role of Engineering in National Development

The relationship between engineering and national development is particularly evident in sectors such as energy and manufacturing, where infrastructure must be built, maintained and upgraded to support economic activity.

But developing a stronger industrial base requires more than demand for engineering services. It also depends on a business environment that supports investment, access to finance, predictable project pipelines, skills development and effective collaboration between industry and relevant institutions.

Engineering companies must also be able to demonstrate that locally delivered work can meet the technical, quality and safety requirements of major projects. This is essential to building confidence among customers and creating opportunities for domestic businesses to participate in increasingly complex assignments.

Dorman Long Engineering’s operations across fabrication, galvanising, asset management, and procurement and logistics place it within this broader industrial ecosystem.

The company operates a hot-dip galvanising facility in Agege, Lagos, which commenced operations in 2009 and has a stated annual processing capacity of 90,000 metric tonnes. It also operates a waterfront facility at the Nigerian Naval Dockyard, alongside its historic head office at Idi-Oro.

These facilities represent investments in industrial infrastructure that can serve requirements across multiple sectors. Their wider significance lies in the role that domestic engineering capacity can play in supporting projects, maintaining assets and developing technical expertise within the country.

For Nigeria to deepen its industrial base, such capabilities must continue to evolve alongside changes in technology, customer expectations and regional competition.

Looking Ahead

Nigeria’s industrial ambitions will ultimately depend on the strength of the businesses, institutions and skilled workforce responsible for turning plans into functioning infrastructure.

Companies with established engineering capabilities have a role to play in that process, but longevity alone is not enough. Continued relevance depends on the ability to adapt, maintain technical standards, invest in people and deliver solutions that meet the needs of the industries they serve.

For Dorman Long Engineering, more than 75 years of operations provide a historical perspective on the development of Nigeria’s engineering sector. Its next chapter will be shaped by how effectively it builds on that experience and responds to the opportunities and demands ahead.

The broader lesson is that industrial development requires sustained investment in the capacity to build, manufacture, maintain and innovate at home. As Nigeria looks to expand its productive economy, the strength of its engineering base will remain an important part of that ambition.
