For 200 million people, football is not a sport in Nigeria. It is language. It is prayer. It is the one thing that makes a Hausa trader in Kano, an Ijaw fisherman in Bayelsa, and an Igbo student in Enugu shout the same word at the same time: “Goal!”
And for too long, that goal has not come.

Nigeria has missed World Cups. Missed AFCONs. Missed age-grade tournaments we used to dominate. We have watched smaller nations with smaller budgets overtake us. We have watched our boys and girls leave for other countries to play, because home offered them no pathway.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football. It is not a memo. It is not a press statement. It is a directive.
The reform will cut across governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions, and accountability. The National Sports Commission has been ordered to work with the NFF Secretariat and key stakeholders on a broad, consultative process. FIFA and CAF will be engaged where appropriate.
This is a major reset. The question now is: will this reset actually reset anything? Or will it be another beautiful document that dies in a drawer?

Because if there is one thing Nigerians have learned about football administration, it is this: the structure can change, but if the mindset does not change, nothing changes.
1. Why We Are Here: A History of Failure
Let’s state the painful truth.
We failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. We have struggled in CHAN. Our domestic league cannot keep its best players for one full season. Our academies produce talent, but we export them raw and buy them back expensive.
Why? It is not because we lack talent. Nigeria is a factory of football genius. It is because we lack systems.
For years, the NFF and the system around it have been run like a private club. Elections were about factions, not competence. Appointments were about loyalty, not track record. Money came in from government and sponsors, but accountability never followed it out.
The pitch suffered. The fans suffered. The players suffered.
President Tinubu has seen this. And he has said: no more.
2. What the Reform Must Cover
The President’s directive is clear and it is correct. The reform must touch 6 areas:
Governance: The NFF board must be about service, not self. Terms must be clear. Conflicts of interest must be declared. Power must be diffused, not concentrated.
Administration: We need professional administrators, not political appointees. People who understand budgeting, contracts, marketing, and compliance. Not people who only know how to book flight tickets.
Stakeholder Representation: The clubs, players union, referees, coaches, women’s football, and fans must have a real seat at the table. Not as decoration. As decision-makers.
Development Pathways: From U13 to U20 to Super Eagles and Super Falcons. A clear ladder. With scouting, data, sports science, and welfare. So no talent is lost because his LGA chairman didn’t like him.
Domestic Competitions: The NPFL, NWFL, and grassroots leagues must be revived and made commercially viable. With TV deals, proper officiating, and security. So our boys don’t have to “japa” to be seen.
Accountability: Audited accounts. Performance contracts. Publish budgets. If you fail to qualify, there must be consequences. If you succeed, there must be reward.
On paper, this is perfect. But paper is where Nigerian reforms have always died.
3. The Danger: Manipulation in New Clothes
Here is the unfortunate thing about Nigerian administration: we are experts at manipulating new structures to produce old results.
Give us a new law, we will find a loophole. Give us a new board, we will elect the same people with new titles.
Give us a new league format, we will still have match-fixing and unpaid salaries.
That is the risk with this football reform.
If the same people with the same old mental capacity are put in charge of the new structure, we will get a new logo, a new slogan, and the same failure.
We have seen it before. Committees were set up. White papers were written. Nothing happened because the people implementing the change were the ones benefiting from the rot.
President Tinubu must not allow that here. Football is too important to be used as a patronage job.
4. The Solution: Independence and Competence
If this reform must work, then one thing must happen: the President must appoint a competent and completely independent person or group to carry out the reform.
Independent means no ties to current NFF factions.
Competent means proven track record in sports management, governance, or business — not just “football lover.”
This team must have a clear mandate and a timeline. 12 months to audit. 18 months to restructure. 24 months to show results on the pitch and in the books.
They must be empowered to ask hard questions: Where did the money go? Why did this coach get hired? Why is this club not paying players? Why is our U17 team not playing 20 games a year?
Without that independence, the NFF Secretariat and the old stakeholders will simply absorb the reform and continue business as usual. They will “engage” FIFA and CAF, but only to tick boxes. They will “consult” stakeholders, but only those who agree with them.
That is how we waste another 4 years.
5. What Success Looks Like
Imagine Nigerian football in 2028 if we get this right.
1. A domestic league where clubs pay salaries on time, fans fill stadiums, and TV rights sell for millions.
2. A youth system where every state has a functional academy feeding into zonal centers.
3. A Super Eagles that qualifies for every major tournament, not by luck, but by planning.
4. A Super Falcons that remains the pride of Africa and competes for the World Cup.
5. A federation whose accounts are public, whose elections are credible, and whose officials are fired for failure.
That is not a dream. Ghana did it in the 2000s. Morocco is doing it now. Senegal is doing it. We have more talent than all of them combined.
What we lack is leadership and structure. President Tinubu is now giving us the leadership. The structure must follow.
6. The Role of FIFA, CAF, and the People
FIFA and CAF must be partners, not obstacles. The President has directed engagement with them “where appropriate.” Good. We must respect statutes, but we must also insist that Nigerian football serves Nigerians first.
But government cannot do this alone. The fans must demand better. The media must investigate. The clubs must professionalize. The players must speak up.
Football reform is not about Aso Rock. It is about all of us.
Conclusion: This Is the Last Chance to Get It Right
Mr. President, Nigerians are watching.
We applaud the directive for comprehensive reform. It is bold. It is necessary. It is overdue.
But a directive is only as good as the people who execute it.
If you appoint the same recycled administrators, if you allow manipulation to creep in, if you choose loyalty over competence, then this reform will join the graveyard of past reforms.
But if you appoint a competent, independent team. If you insist on transparency. If you protect the process from the old mental capacity… then we can finally say: Nigerian football has a future.
The ball is now in your court, sir.
