Comoros 0-2 Nigeria: Five key observations as Eguavoen begins Olympic race with Super Falcons

For a country with Nigeria’s pedigree in women’s football, the objective is not simply to progress through the qualifiers. It is to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level

Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their 2028 Los Angeles Olympics qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Friday night, but their frustrating first-half performance showed there is still plenty of work for interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.

The ten-time African champions struggled to break down the Coelacanths before Michelle Alozie scored early in the second half to provide the breakthrough. Nigeria eventually secured the win, but their inability to convert several clear opportunities prevented them from establishing a more commanding advantage.

Comoros arrived in Nigeria after scoring 30 goals without reply across two matches against Sudan in the opening round. They proved considerably more difficult to break down against the Super Falcons, showing resilience and defensive discipline throughout the first half.

The victory gives Nigeria an advantage ahead of Tuesday’s return fixture, also scheduled for Ikenne, with the aggregate winner set to face Morocco in the third qualifying round.

PREMIUM TIMES looks at five key observations from the encounter

Nigeria’s search for a prolific centre-forward continues

The Super Falcons created enough opportunities to win by a wider margin, but their wastefulness in front of goal remains a concern.

Nigeria hit the woodwork three times in the opening 30 minutes, yet failed to translate their attacking pressure into goals before the interval. Several players also missed promising opportunities, while poor decision-making in the final third repeatedly allowed Comoros to escape punishment.

Monday Gift and Uchenna Kanu bring energy, aggression and movement to Nigeria’s attack, while Folashade Ijamilusi offers another option. However, the question remains whether the current crop can consistently provide the clinical finishing required against stronger opponents.

At the highest level, dominance means little without goals. Nigeria can control possession and create openings, but they need forwards capable of converting limited opportunities when the opposition is better organised.

Asisat Oshoala, who turned 32 on Friday, remains one of the greatest strikers in Nigerian women’s football, alongside legends such as Perpetua Nkwocha and Mercy Ajide. However, the Falcons must also prepare for the future of their centre-forward position.

Joy Omewa, Blessing Nkor and Janet Semenya Akekoromowei are among the players who could contribute to that transition, but the challenge is turning potential into consistent goals at senior international level.

Against Comoros, defender Michelle Alozie provided the breakthrough. While her contribution deserves credit, Nigeria need their forwards to take greater responsibility for converting chances, especially when the stakes rise against stronger opposition like Morocco in the next round.

Eguavoen wins his first match, but the Falcons lack clear identity

Augustine Eguavoen has enjoyed a long career in Nigerian football as a player, coach and administrator. He won the Africa Cup of Nations as a player, helped Nigeria qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in 1994 and later led the Super Eagles to bronze at the 2006 AFCON.

He subsequently became the Nigeria Football Federation’s technical director before taking charge of the Super Falcons on an interim basis following the departure of Justine Madugu.

His first match ended in victory, but the performance exposed the work required to give Nigeria a more recognisable playing identity.

Eguavoen opted for a 4-4-2 formation, yet the Falcons often lacked cohesion in the final third. Their movement and decision-making were inconsistent, and they relied too heavily on individual moments rather than coordinated attacking patterns.

The second half was more encouraging, with Alozie’s goal easing the pressure and Nigeria appearing more comfortable after the break. However, one match is insufficient to make a definitive judgement on a coach who has had limited time to implement his ideas.

Eguavoen’s experience in men’s football is extensive, but this assignment presents a different challenge as his immediate task is to identify the right combinations, improve the team’s attacking structure and establish a system that brings the best out of his players.

Winning the opening match is a positive start. Building a cohesive team capable of competing consistently at the highest level will be the real measure of his work.

Ohale’s retirement leaves a significant defensive gap

Osinachi Ohale’s retirement from international football after more than 15 years of service marks the end of an important chapter for the Super Falcons.

The experienced defender represented Nigeria at major tournaments and won multiple continental titles. Her positioning, experience and understanding of international football made her a key figure across several generations of the national team.

At 34, however, the need for renewal had become increasingly apparent. Nigeria’s defensive problems at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations contributed to a disappointing campaign in which they lost their continental crown and missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ohale’s departure creates an opportunity to introduce younger players, but replacing her experience will require more than changing personnel.

Against Comoros, Christy Ucheibe operated in a deeper defensive role alongside Shukurat Oladipo, while Joy Igbokwe played as the midfield pivot. The arrangement gave Eguavoen options as he considers how to rebuild the team.

Ucheibe’s versatility could prove useful, while Oladipo has an opportunity to establish herself as part of the next generation of defenders.

However, Comoros did not provide the toughest examination of Nigeria’s defence. The real test will come against stronger opponents who can exploit positional errors and punish lapses in concentration.

Ohale’s experience will be missed, but the Falcons must now develop a dependable defensive partnership capable of serving the team for years to come.

Joy Igbokwe makes a promising senior debut

One of the encouraging developments from Eguavoen’s first match was the senior debut of Nassarawa Amazons’ Joy Igbokwe, captain of Nigeria’s under-20 women’s team.

Visa complications prevented Igbokwe from joining the Falconets for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. She has now received an opportunity with the senior side, taking an important step in her international career.

The midfielder was trusted to operate as the pivot in Eguavoen’s 4-4-2 formation, a significant responsibility for a player making her first appearance at senior level.

Igbokwe did not look out of place and provided another option in a midfield missing Deborah Abiodun and stalwart, Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene.

One appearance should not lead to exaggerated expectations, but her debut was an encouraging start. Nigeria need young players to step forward as the team transitions into a new era, and Igbokwe has given Eguavoen another option to consider.

Her next challenge is to build on the opportunity and demonstrate that she can contribute consistently at senior international level.

Nigeria must turn attacking pressure into goals

The three occasions on which Nigeria struck the woodwork in the opening 30 minutes illustrated their ability to get into dangerous positions. Their failure to score during that period, however, exposed the difference between creating chances and finishing them.

Alozie eventually broke the deadlock early in the second half, giving the Falcons the reward their pressure had demanded. But Nigeria could have made the contest considerably more comfortable with better execution and decision-making.

Comoros deserve credit for resisting Nigeria for so long. Their remarkable 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan had demonstrated their attacking potential, but their performance in Ikenne showed they could also remain disciplined against a more experienced opponent.

Nigeria must improve their final pass, make smarter decisions around the penalty area and show greater composure when clear chances arrive. Against stronger teams, such opportunities may be far less frequent.

The 2-0 victory puts the Falcons in a favourable position ahead of the return fixture, but a more clinical performance would help ease the pressure as the qualifying campaign progresses.

What next for the Super Falcons?

Nigeria will face Comoros again at the Remo Stars Stadium on Tuesday, with the aggregate winner advancing to the third round to face Morocco.

Eguavoen has secured a positive result in his first match, while Igbokwe’s debut and Alozie’s decisive contribution offer reasons for encouragement. However, the team must improve its finishing, attacking cohesion and defensive organisation following Ohale’s retirement.

For a country with Nigeria’s pedigree in women’s football, the objective is not simply to progress through the qualifiers. It is to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

The first step has been taken; now, the Super Falcons must make their performance match their ambition.
