Nigerian Law School confirms student’s death at Lagos Campus

The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a student who fell from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus.

The student, who was from the Enugu Campus, was in Lagos for the school’s externship programme and was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel.

The school, in a statement shared on its Facebook on Monday by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, said the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Friday, 7 August.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement stated.

The school did not name the student or disclose what led to the fall.

It noted that it was working with the relevant authorities and the deceased student’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” Mr Osho said.

The management expressed condolences to the student’s family, colleagues and others affected by the death.

It also appealed to the public and the media to respect the family’s request for privacy as they mourned.

The school said the family had asked that they be allowed to grieve without actions that could further compound their pain.

The Nigerian Law School added that it remained committed to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.

Police reported suspected suicide

The school’s confirmation followed an earlier report on Sunday that the deceased was 23-year-old Faith Alayande and that the Lagos State Police Command had confirmed the incident.

According to the report, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident was reported after the student was found unresponsive within the hostel premises.

Ms Adebisi reportedly stated that a hostel matron alerted the police and that a fellow student and a relative had found what was described as a suicide note.

She was quoted as saying the student allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building before she could be located.

The report said the student’s body was later taken to a morgue, while the police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

However, while the police account reported by PUNCH, suggested a suspected suicide, the Nigerian Law School’s Monday statement described the incident simply as a fall from the hostel rooftop and did not state that the student died by suicide.

The latest incident is not the first reported death of a Nigerian Law School student in circumstances linked to suicide.

In December 2025, another student, Ayomiposi Ojajuni, allegedly died by suicide after he was reportedly barred from sitting for the Bar Final examinations at the school’s Yola Campus in Adamawa State.
