WAFU B U-20 Preview: Flying Eagles seek revenge against Burkina Faso in showdown

With the regional title and qualification for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana at stake, there is little room for sentiment when the two West African heavyweights meet again on Sunday

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will have more than the WAFU B U-20 Championship trophy on their minds when they face familiar foes Burkina Faso in Sunday’s 2026 final.

The two sides have emerged as the last teams standing after four matches apiece, setting up a repeat of their Group B encounter and giving Nigeria an immediate opportunity to avenge the only defeat they have suffered in the tournament.

But with the regional title and qualification for next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana at stake, there is little room for sentiment when the two West African heavyweights meet again on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the tie, head coach Abdul Maikaba gave his thoughts on expectations for the game.

“I think this is an opportunity for us to redeem ourselves, having lost to Burkina Faso in the group stage. Having played them before, we now have an idea of their shape and structure, and we are working on how to capitalise on their weaknesses, while also capitalising on our own strengths.”

”It has been a gradual process, and we have arrived here against Burkina Faso. We met in the group stage, and we lost; this is the second time in the final. I hope it will be our turn to win the game so that we can round it up with a trophy,” the former Akwa United head coach added.

Two different routes to the final

Nigeria impressively began their campaign, defeating Ghana 4-2 before cruising past Togo with a convincing 3-0 victory.

Their final Group B fixture, however, brought their first setback, as the Flying Eagles were beaten 2-0 by Sunday’s final opponent. This result saw the Young Stallions finish top of the group with seven points, one ahead of Nigeria’s six.

Burkina Faso remained unbeaten throughout the group stage, while Nigeria advanced as runners-up after two wins and that solitary defeat.

Abdul Maikaba’s side responded strongly in the semi-final, producing a dramatic 2-2 draw against hosts Côte d’Ivoire after extra time before winning 4-3 on penalties.

Goalkeeper Clinton Lawani emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks to send Nigeria into the final.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, have been the tournament’s only unbeaten side, with the Young Stallions opening with a 1-1 draw against Ghana before defeating Togo 3-1. They then made their biggest statement by beating Nigeria 2-0, and followed that with another 2-0 victory over Niger in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, the two teams are meeting for the first time in the final of the regional competition, with all previous meetings happening in the group stage.

Flying Eagles have unfinished business

For Nigeria, Sunday’s final offers the perfect opportunity to put the group-stage defeat behind them.

Burkina Faso already know they can hurt the Flying Eagles, having exploited Nigeria’s weaknesses to claim a 2-0 victory on Matchday 3, but this is a different game, with the WAFU B title now at stake.

Nigeria must start with greater intensity, maintain concentration throughout and avoid the defensive mistakes that allowed Burkina Faso to take control of their previous meeting.

Abdulmuiz Adeleke, Oraro Lucky, Habila Simeon and goalkeeper Clinton Lawani are among the players expected to rise to the occasion. At the same time, Maikaba faces another major tactical test against a Burkina Faso side that has yet to taste defeat.

History favours Nigeria

Burkina Faso have reached this stage before, but their only previous WAFU B U-20 final appearance ended in disappointment.

The Young Stallions reached the 2018 final in Togo but lost 2-0 to Senegal. Nigeria, meanwhile, have dominated the competition in recent editions.

The Flying Eagles won the title in both of their last two appearances.

In 2024, Nigeria defeated Ghana 2-1 in Lomé to retain the championship, having previously beaten Benin Republic 3-1 in Niamey in the 2022 final.

The Flying Eagles are therefore two-time WAFU B U-20 champions and will be chasing a third regional crown on Sunday. Burkina Faso, by contrast, is seeking their first-ever WAFU B U-20 championship title.

Nigeria also have another piece of unfinished business after losing 1-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in last year’s edition.

A victory over Burkina Faso would therefore represent another step towards restoring the Flying Eagles’ dominance in regional youth football.

More than a trophy at stake

Sunday’s final carries consequences beyond the regional title.

Victory would crown Nigeria the 2026 WAFU B U-20 champions and secure qualification for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Burkina Faso have already beaten Nigeria once. Now the Flying Eagles have 90 minutes, or more if need be, to change the story.

One win separates Burkina Faso from a perfect tournament. Meanwhile, for Nigeria and the Flying Eagles, one more victory would deliver the trophy, revenge, and open another chapter in the nation’s proud history at the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
