Nigeria secures release of six citizens detained in Côte d’Ivoire

The federal government has announced the release of six Nigerians who had been detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes, following months of diplomatic and consular engagements between both countries.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said four of the detainees were released on 22 June, while the remaining two regained their freedom a day later after sustained interventions by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.

The names of the Nigerians and the specific economic crimes allegedly committed were not disclosed.

The ministry described the development as the result of sustained diplomatic efforts involving the embassy and relevant Ivorian authorities.

The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noted that the Nigerian mission maintained regular consular access to the detainees throughout their detention, monitored their welfare, and engaged with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, and other institutions to facilitate their release.

The ministry also commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy officials for what it described as their professionalism and commitment in resolving the matter.

It further expressed appreciation to the government of Côte d’Ivoire for cooperating with Nigerian authorities, noting that the cordial relationship between the two West African countries played a significant role in securing the detainees’ release.

“The successful release of the six Nigerians reflects the effectiveness of sustained diplomatic engagement and underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad,” the ministry said.

It reaffirmed that safeguarding Nigerians overseas remains a key priority of the country’s foreign policy, adding that diplomatic missions would continue to provide consular support and engage host governments whenever necessary.

It also advised Nigerians living or travelling abroad to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain regular contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate to enable prompt assistance when required.
