Nigerian footballers will remain firmly in the spotlight in Europe after a dramatic night of UEFA Champions League action on Wednesday confirmed the teams advancing to the knockout stages of the competition.
With all 18 matches kicking off at the same time, the final round of the league phase delivered high drama, goals and major shifts on the table.

By the end of the night, eight teams had booked automatic places in the Round of 16, while several others – led by clubs with key Nigerian players – secured spots in the playoff round.
For Nigeria’s leading stars, it was a mixed but largely positive evening, with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Raphael Onyedika and Bruno Onyemaechi all seeing their clubs progress beyond the league phase.

Osimhen powers Galatasaray into playoffs
Despite a 2–0 defeat away to Manchester City, Galatasaray, led by Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, finished 20th in the standings to claim a place in the Round of 16 playoffs.
Osimhen, who has been one of Galatasaray’s most influential players in Europe this season, once again led the line against City, as the Turkish champions fought to keep their qualification hopes alive. Although they could not avoid defeat at the Etihad, results elsewhere ensured their place among the teams still in contention.
The former African Footballer of the Year now has the chance to guide Galatasaray into the last 16 through the playoff route, keeping Nigerian interest alive deep into the competition.
Lookman’s Atalanta scrape through
Ademola Lookman and Atalanta endured a nervy finish to the league phase but did just enough to qualify for the playoffs. The Italian side finished 15th despite a 1–0 defeat away to Union Saint-Gilloise on the final night.
Lookman, who has been a key figure for Atalanta this season, remains central to their attacking plans as they prepare for the knockout playoffs. For the Super Eagles forward, the opportunity to shine on Europe’s biggest club stage continues, even after a difficult evening in Belgium.
Onyedika, Onyemaechi fly Nigerian flag
Belgian side Club Brugge, featuring Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika, produced one of the standout performances of the night with a convincing 3–0 win over Marseille. The result secured Brugge a 19th-place finish and a playoff spot, with Onyedika once again underlining his growing reputation as a reliable presence in midfield.
Similarly, Olympiacos, with Nigerian defender Bruno Onyemaechi in their ranks, edged Ajax 2–1 in Amsterdam to finish 18th and advance to the playoff round. The Greek side showed resilience under pressure, and Onyemaechi’s progression adds another Nigerian name to the knockout stages.
Napoli crash out as Chelsea soar
One of the night’s biggest stories came in Naples, where Chelsea stunned Napoli 3–2 to seal a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the Round of 16. The result ended Napoli’s Champions League campaign and confirmed their elimination from the competition.
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur continued their strong European form with a 2–0 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt, securing a top-four finish, while Liverpool delivered a ruthless display in a 6–0 demolition of Qarabag.
Automatic qualifiers and road ahead
The eight teams that qualified directly for the Round of 16 are Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP and Manchester City.
Clubs featuring Nigerian players will now turn their focus to the playoff round, where the stakes rise sharply.
