The Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital Plc have mourned the victims of Tuesday’s fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, which killed at least 10 people.
FIRS in a statement on Thursday said four of its staff died in the blaze, which engulfed the sixth and seventh floors where its Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Office were located.

“The Management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of four of our colleagues in the fire incident that occurred on Tuesday at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos. The unfortunate incident has thrown the entire FIRS community into mourning,” the agency said.
United Capital Plc confirmed six fatalities. “Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void.

“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as providing all the support we can to them during this most difficult time,” the firm said, adding that preparations were under way for a memorial service.
President Tinubu also extended condolences to the bereaved families and to the management of FIRS, United Capital, United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Afriland Properties Limited.

He praised emergency responders for their “deep sense of responsibility during the evacuation” and urged “more caution, training, and alertness to avert such emergencies in the future.”
The Federal Government, through Information Minister Mohammed Idris, described the blaze as “a most painful and devastating loss, not only to the families and institutions directly affected, but to the nation as a whole.”

He said the government was working with Lagos State authorities to investigate the cause and prevent a recurrence.
FIRS said it was reviewing safety measures across its offices nationwide, while United Capital pledged full support to the families of the deceased.
Emergency responders rescued several trapped workers, with some revived after suffering smoke inhalation.
