El-Rufai petitions Police Service Commission over attack on Kaduna ADC gathering

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has submitted a petition to the Police Service Commission (PSC) against alleged unprofessional conduct, abuse of office and serial violations of the Police Act by some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command.

Mr El-Rufai, in an 11-page document, detailed his complaint against alleged “Unprofessional conduct, Abuse of Office and Serial Violation of the Police Act 2020 and regulations by the commissioner and some officers of the Kaduna state command of the Nigeria Police”.

He requested an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation of his allegations.

Mr El-Rufai informed the PSC that he had earlier addressed a petition to the Inspector-General of Police on alleged unlawful acts executed by some officers and men of the Nigerian Police since the resumption in Kaduna of the current commissioner on 30, December 2024.

Mr El-Rufai had earlier condemned the disruption of a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna, blaming the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state government for the incident.

He argued that the failure of the police to stop the assault on the ADC gathering reflected a breakdown of policing under the current administration.

“I am writing as a citizen of Nigeria and former Governor of Kaduna State to formally lodge this complaint and demand an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful and unconstitutional conduct of the commissioner of police (“the commissioner) and some officers of the Kaduna state police command.

“This will assist the police service commission (the commission) in discharging its function under the constitution and section 6 (1)(a) to (e) of the commission’s enabling Act of 2011.

“I submit this petition with a profound sense of responsibility as a citizen of Nigeria and a public servant who has served our nation at national and Subnational levels, including dedicating eight years to improving Kaduna state for all its residents. I am motivated by concern for the Nigerian Police, which, despite challenges, remains the primary law enforcement institution in the country.

“It is the duty of all citizens not only to support it but also to ensure that the commission can exercise its regulatory powers to enforce discipline and promote ethical conduct among all police officers.

“This objective can only be achieved if the commission’s attention is consistently drawn to egregious conduct by officers who served interests contrary to those outlined in section 4 of the police Act 2020. Such actions tarnish the image of the police force and erode public confidence in its leadership”, Mr El-Rufai said in the petition.

Efforts made by this reporter to confirm the receipt of the petition were unsuccessful as the spokesperson of the Police Service Commission could not be reached on the phone.
