The Enugu State Government has warned residents, businesses, organisations, and advertisers against vandalising, damaging, or using bus shelters and other public transport infrastructure across the state without authorisation.
The State Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, issued a warning in a statement released in Enugu by the ministry’s spokesman, Odumegwu Chinwendu, which was made available to reporters on Thursday.

Ozor stated that the newly built bus shelters and transport infrastructure are public assets created through substantial government investments to develop a cleaner, safer, more organised, and modern transportation system.
He explained that the ministry had observed with grave concern the rising number of posters, stickers, banners, handbills, and other unauthorised advertisements being posted on bus shelters and related public infrastructure across the state.

According to him, such acts are unlawful and unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated.
The commissioner instructed that no posters, stickers, banners, advertisements, handbills, or public notices be placed on any bus shelter or transport infrastructure without the ministry’s explicit approval.
He warned that any individual, organisation, business, or agent found to be defacing, damaging, or unlawfully utilising public transport infrastructure would face appropriate sanctions.

He explained that the sanctions would involve hefty fines and potential legal action.
Ozor further stated that the enforcement teams had been tasked with monitoring public transport infrastructure across the state and ensuring full compliance with the directive.
He explained that the directive is part of the government’s wider behavioural change campaign aimed at encouraging civic responsibility, environmental cleanliness, orderliness, and respect for public infrastructure.

The commissioner stated that the ongoing defacement of public infrastructure increases maintenance and cleaning costs, creates visual disorder, damages the city’s aesthetics, and undermines the government’s vision for a modern and organised Enugu.
He therefore urged residents and stakeholders to support the protection, preservation, and responsible utilisation of public assets for the collective benefit of all.
“Together, let us keep Enugu clean, organised, and beautiful,” Ozor added.
