NiDCOM mourns Nigerians killed in UK, Canada

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of two Nigerians killed in separate violent incidents in the United Kingdom and Canada within the first week of the year.

Describing the deaths as distressing and unacceptable, NiDCOM, in a statement issued on Friday, called for a thorough investigation into the deaths of the Nigerians.

One of the victims, identified as John Temitope Onetufo, a 23-year-old, was fatally stabbed on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of London.

The other, residing in Canada, Osemwengie Irorere, aged 46, was shot and killed at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto last Sunday.

The NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the killings were both shocking and deeply troubling.

According to the statement, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa “extended her heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims at this difficult time.”

“The NiDCOM Boss equally commended the swift response of the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service. She called for thorough, transparent and timely investigations to ensure that justice is served,” the statement also read.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa insisted that justice must be served and urged for “thorough, transparent and timely investigations.”

She also assured that the NiDCOM would provide support to the affected families, in partnership with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada.
