NIS warns Nigerians against misuse of US visa

The Nigeria Immigration Service has warned Nigerian travellers against the misuse of US visas.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, the agency urged Nigerians to adhere to the travel purpose identified in their visa application, noting that violations will likely result in visa revocation or deportation.

The NIS said breaching visa conditions could also attract severe penalties, such as permanent removal from the US and ineligibility for future travel.

“All visa holders are advised to adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications strictly.

“Applicants are reminded that security screening by US authorities continues beyond initial entry. Any violation of immigration or other laws may result in visa revocation or deportation,” the statement read.

The agency also asked Nigerian students in the US to remain in active study.

It noted that students who withdraw from schools, are perpetually absent or change academic programmes without notification are also likely to have their visas cancelled.

They might also lose future eligibility, according to the agency.

It added that consular officers may deny tourist visas if there is reason to believe the applicant’s primary intent is to give birth in the US and obtain citizenship for the child.

“The NIS continues to collaborate with the US Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.

“Compliance with visa regulations is essential to safeguard legitimate travel by Nigerian citizens,” it further noted.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the US mission earlier warned that travelling to the US with the intent of giving birth would lead to sanctions.

According to the embassy, requesting a visa with the sole aim of giving birth in the United States is not permitted.

It added that consular officers will deny visa applications if they have reason to believe that this is the applicant’s intent.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have US citizenship is not permitted,” the mission stated in a Facebook post.

“Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” it added.
