Chasing a rare piece of history

When Atlético face Real Sociedad in the 2026 Copa del Rey final, Lookman will be chasing more than a trophy.

PT WHATSAPP CHANNEL

He will be chasing history.

Only one Nigerian has ever lifted Spain’s most prestigious domestic cup; Emmanuel Amuneke, who did so with Barcelona in 1997.

Since then, others have approached.

None have finished the job.

Finidi George reached that same final in 1997 with Real Betis and even found the net, only to lose in extra time to a Barcelona side inspired by Luís Figo.

Years later, Ikechukwu Uche carried Villarreal to the semi-finals in 2015, but no further.

Now, the gap; almost 30 years, waits to be closed.

A January arrival, an immediate impact

Lookman’s move in February 2026 was swift.

His impact, even quicker.

In just a handful of Copa del Rey appearances, he has delivered goals, assists, and decisive moments; none bigger than his influence against Barcelona in the semi-finals.

In the first leg in Madrid, he scored once and assisted another in a stunning 4–0 victory.

It was a result that carried weight.

Because when Atlético faltered in the second leg, losing 3–0, the damage had already been done. They advanced 4–3 on aggregate.

Without Lookman’s contribution in that first meeting, there would be no final.

Simeone’s system, Lookman’s edge

Under Diego Simeone, Atlético Madrid have built their identity on discipline, structure, and control.

Lookman adds something different.

Pace. Directness. Disruption.

He stretches defences, thrives in transition, and injects unpredictability into a system often defined by precision. On the counter-attack, he becomes a weapon, one capable of turning defence into opportunity in seconds.

A final built on fine margins

The stage is set at the Estadio de La Cartuja on 18 April.

And the margins will be thin.

Atlético are chasing their first Copa del Rey title since 2013, a chance to claim the trophy for the 11th time. But their build-up has been uneven. A congested schedule, including European commitments, has taken its toll, with fatigue evident in recent defeats.

Real Sociedad arrive differently; fresher, more measured, quietly efficient. Their semi-final victory over Athletic Club underlined their ability to manage pressure and control tight contests.

History complicates the narrative further.

Atlético are unbeaten in their last ten league meetings with Sociedad. But in the Copa del Rey, Sociedad have enjoyed more success in recent encounters.

The deciding figures

For Atlético, the attacking responsibility will not rest on Lookman alone.

Antoine Griezmann brings experience, movement, and clinical finishing. Julián Álvarez adds energy and sharpness.

But Lookman’s role is clear; stretch the game, attack space, create moments.

For Sociedad, Mikel Oyarzabal stands as the focal point. Their captain, their reference point, their man for decisive moments.

Tactics, fatigue, and fine details

This final will likely be defined by contrast.

Atlético; compact, reactive, dangerous in transition.
Sociedad; controlled, patient, structured in possession.

Team news could tilt the balance. Atlético may be without key defensive figures, while Sociedad also carry absences of their own.

Small details. Big consequences.

The expectation? A tight contest. Perhaps a narrow 2–1 outcome.

More than a final

For Lookman, this is not just about systems or scorelines.

It is about legacy.

A chance to follow Amuneke. To step into a space untouched by any Nigerian in nearly three decades. To turn a mid-season move into a historic milestone.

Because if he delivers on this stage, it will not just be a trophy.

It will be a statement.

And for Nigeria, a long-awaited chapter finally rewritten.
