A member of the House of Representatives, Godwin Offiono, on Wednesday, resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Offiono’s defection was announced during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who read his letter to lawmakers on the floor of the House.
Mr Offiono, who represents Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River State, said his exit from the PDP followed deep-seated structural issues within the party, which, he argued, had frustrated his ability to deliver effective representation.
In his letter, he expressed appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided during his period in office, but noted that the prevailing situation had compelled him to move on.

“It has become clear that the present structure cannot support my commitment to effective representation and the advancement of my political aspirations for the good people of Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency and Nigeria at large,” he said.

Mr Offiono’s defection is the latest in a wave of political realignments in Cross River, a state that has in recent years witnessed significant shifts in its partisan landscape, especially between the PDP and APC.
His move is expected to further strengthen the APC’s influence in the northern part of the state ahead of future political contests.
Cross River State is governed by APC’s Bassey Otu, who assumed office in 2023. Mr Otu was a senator on the platform of the PDP before he defected to the APC some years ago.
