There is an intriguing idea at the centre of Ordinary People, the Nollywood action-thriller series directed by Moses Inwang: what if the seemingly ordinary people living behind the gates of an affluent Lagos estate were anything but ordinary?
The eight-episode Netflix series builds its world around Mirage Estate. In this upscale community, polished houses, quiet streets and seemingly respectable neighbours conceal a catalogue of crimes, betrayals and dangerous secrets.

It is a promising premise. Unfortunately, Ordinary People repeatedly demonstrates that having too many secrets is not the same as knowing how to tell a compelling story.
The series, which premiered on Netflix on 4 September 2026 after three years of production across Lagos, Bayelsa and Berlin, boasts a formidable ensemble cast, including Ramsey Nouah, Adunni Ade, Shawn Faqua, Chidi Mokeme, Michelle Dede, Sharon Ooja, Uche Montana, Lasisi Elenu and Jackie Appiah.

Yet, for all its ambition, star power and production scale, Ordinary People struggles to turn its impressive ingredients into the taut thriller it promises to be.
Plot
The series begins in 2017 with a bloody assault on the compound of Niger Delta crime lord Tornado, played by Ramsey Nouah, and his wife, portrayed by Adunni Ade.
A baptism quickly turns into a nightmare as armed police officers storm the compound and a helicopter is brought down, immediately announcing that this is a world far removed from the tranquillity of suburban Lagos.

Years later, Dare Laguda, played by Shawn Faqua, arrives at Mirage Estate.
Dare appears to be an ordinary fintech worker and an unusually curious new neighbour eager to familiarise himself with the people around him. But curiosity is not innocent. He is a hacker who secretly surveys the estate’s residents, collecting information for reasons that gradually become clearer.
Among the residents are Tornado and his wife, who have reinvented themselves as a seemingly respectable bakery-owning couple while quietly pursuing old scores.
There are also Tolu and Margaret, played by Chidi Mokeme and Michelle Dede, an undercover intelligence couple whose seemingly conventional marriage is part of a larger operation.
A Nollywood actress, played by Sharon Ooja, battles personal problems while her husband attempts to accommodate her increasingly troubling behaviour. Comedian Pere, portrayed by Lasisi Elenu, and his wife Audrey, played by Uche Montana, live behind the façade of a normal marriage that conceals abuse.
Elsewhere, a Ghanaian couple hides a fraud case and a corpse in their freezer, while the estate chairman, a doctor, carries the burden of a crime involving an illegal abortion.
Soon, Dare’s surveillance begins to intersect with Tornado’s revenge mission, the intelligence officers’ operation and the private crimes of the estate’s residents.

The movie ‘Ordinary People’ is interested in the difference between appearance and reality, the masks people wear in public and the darker identities they conceal in private. The estate, therefore, becomes more than a setting; it is intended as a miniature representation of society, where respectable appearances can coexist with violence, corruption, abuse and criminality.
It captures the series’s larger argument with dark irony: beneath the estate’s neat architecture lies a moral wasteland.
The problem is that the series rarely trusts its audience enough to make the discovery. Instead, it frequently explains what viewers should already be allowed to infer.
Rather than allowing character histories and motivations to emerge naturally through action, dialogue and visual storytelling, the series often uses his narration to spell out backstories and explain developments.
Ordinary People too often tells viewers what they should think about what has already happened.
More problematic is the tone of his narration. The series also suffers from narrative overcrowding.
Tornado’s revenge story is arguably the most distinctive strand. His decision to hide in plain sight provides the series with a potentially compelling crime-thriller engine.
But that storyline repeatedly competes for attention with stories about domestic abuse, fraud, mental health, illegal abortion and undercover intelligence operations.
Individually, several of these stories could sustain their own series. Here, however, they are often placed side by side without sufficient narrative integration.
Ordinary People keep introducing secrets faster than they create suspense around them. The viewer is therefore frequently confronted with another revelation without having had enough time to become emotionally invested in the previous one.
Familiar faces, unfamiliar depth
The ensemble is undoubtedly one of the series’ attractions. Ramsey Nouah brings the requisite gravitas to Tornado, particularly as a criminal forced to inhabit the appearance of an ordinary family man. Adunni Ade complements him effectively as his wife.
Uche Montana’s character has the potential to become one of the show’s most emotionally resonant figures, particularly because her marriage exposes the quieter and more intimate forms of violence concealed within the estate.
The actors are recognisable enough to attract attention. Still, the writing does not consistently provide them with the depth required to transform the characters from plot devices into fully realised people.
This is especially unfortunate because the series’s premise depends on viewers caring about the people behind the masks.
The series sometimes appears more interested in revealing the next secret, introducing another character or escalating the violence than in allowing tension to breathe.
‘Ordinary People’ is frustrating precisely because it is not a bad idea. In fact, it may contain the bones of a very good thriller.

But the series spreads itself too thin. It piles secret upon secret, corpse upon corpse, and twist upon twist without consistently building the emotional or psychological tension necessary for those revelations to matter.
For viewers primarily looking for action, familiar faces, and a steady supply of twists, Ordinary People offers enough to sustain interest.
For viewers more concerned with character development, pacing and narrative economy, the shortcomings are difficult to ignore.
However, this does not reduce the watch value or the entertaining thrills the movie offers.
